i was wondering if flies for squid are available to buy anywhere or would it be a case of trying to make my own?

Been meaning to try it since

Been meaning to try it since seeing some nice looking squidding flys in flylife, but havent found a source of light squid spikes. The smaller squid spikes have just too heavy a main spike, so you'd have to rig it around, and the only time i've seen the squid hooks by themselves they were mighty expensive!  There are however a few really like 1.5 size squid jigs you could chuck on the end of a heavy enough flyline.

Would be interesting to figure out where to get the hooks to tie up some though. I'm thinking something with heavy eyes on the front for clouser like action, or something soft and flowing so when you strip the fly, it pulses a bit to attract the squid.

I pulled my ol flybox out the other night to put a pic of my custom clouser bream/mulloway smasher on a topic the other night but got too drunk and went to bed.. Ive still got my reels but no rods... time for the passion to start again I think... gotta mulie cube pattern that used to work well on the winter tailor out in the foam at mewstone.. Might have to start a tut thread!!! tying flies is more fun than having foxtel!!

I have been tying a few.

I have been tying a few.  Squid do take it but you have to get across a patch that are readily taking not ones that follow and think about it for a while.  Fishing mine on a 6wt Nitro with a rio sinking line- cant remember what one but its 200gr from memory.  The rod is capable of fishing a 7wt line so thats where I get away with it.  Otherwise I would just do it on my 9wt.

Definitely good fun, not as productive as the regular jigs but something else to try.

To make the flies you need some really small crowns- ebay is a good source, then shanks off some cheap 1/0 long shank hooks.  Cut the bend and pointy bits off then fix the crown in place and tie it up.  Im going for lots of shine with orange/chartreuse colours and some white added in.  The wing needs to be on top or it will spin around and squid wont take it.  And forget natural materials, squid tear them up.  Synthetics are the only way to go.

As you can see by the streaks of black, this one got taken a few times.

Found these ones: http://www.squidjig.com/squidfishingsupplies/squidjighooks.htm

And these: http://hooksonline.com.au/sitebuildercontent/sbsimages/misc/show_image.html?linkedwidth=actual&linkpath=http://www.hooksonline.com.au/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/SQ-1.jpg&target=tlx_new&title=Owner Squid hooks SQ-1

The owner ones could give some interesting jointed flies. You can get an "extension wire" from flyworld you could tie the upper part of the fly to if there wasnt enough room on the hooks themselves.
