skippers ticket

Hi did a post about hire boats at exmouth. I dont have a skippers ticket .

Being hearing impaired I am almost certain I would not get a ticket.

Only thing stopping me is I would not be able to hear the radio to good.

If this is the case would anyone up at exmouth be willing to take me out

I will hire the boat for 2 days.

Up there from the 1st of november till the following Wednesday.

If the radio would not stop me getting skippers ticket any comments appreciated

Love to get into Gts and Mackrel

i cant see you not being able to hear the radio stopping you from getting your ticket

i got my ticket by using a small 2.5 meter inflatable which didnt have a radio so i dont think they care

obviously for safety reasons it would be better to be able to hear the radio especially out deep if by yourself

I stand to be corrected

I stand to be corrected (would hope not), but I would be very surprised if being hearing impaired automatically disqualified you from obtaining a RST.

The radio check forms only a small part of the assessment, and in any case you are not actually required to have a radio on your boat unless you are going more than 5NM out to sea.

I would suggest contacting one of the bigger boat schools to see if they have come across it before. Failing that, Dept for Transport.

Deafness

Your deafness shouldn.t prevent you from getting a skippers ticket.

About 2 years back there was a deaf yatchsman who was travelling round Oz stop in for a week. All his log ins / outs were done via sms and he would send emails before he arrived to alert the sea rescue groups he was coming and give his phone number and get theirs so he could keep them up to date on his progress.

I'm deaf and have a skippers ticket so watch out all!!

First how deaf are you, can you hear with hearing aids. I just up graded my hearing aids to a very powerful type, cost a cool $8500 and there is plus on that with assesories. I have altered my radio to take headphones, and using a VHF I have the type with "Digital Selective Calling" which is basicly a text message service. Should I get into difficulty I only have to press the red emergency button and the radio will transmit a digital message to all listening stations including the water police that I am in trouble and my co-ordinates.

Being deaf is no excuse for not getting a skippers ticket.

This is all good advice

This is all good advice everyone.  There should be no way that hearing impairments should restrict obtaining a ticket.  i know that colour blindness does have an impact on commercial tickets due to picking the colour of navigational lights.  usually colour blindness will result in a ticket only being valid during the day.  but a hearing impairment is easily overcome from a radio perspective, either through technology or just by having another person on board.

Dont think it would matter, radio only required for 5NM (i assume tigerfish is right) and youd probly have someone else on board if u were doing that?

If you get a VHF with DSC

Be aware that to operate it legally you require a VHF Radio Operators Licence also.

Easy!

Just find someone to qualify you on a jetski. I did my ticket on a boat through TAFE, learnt everything from navigation to man overboard drill, plus lots of pratical at the helm and use of radio. It took two or three full days and was very thorough.

My mate,on the other hand did his ticket on his jetski. It was riduclous. A couple of hours theory and then all he had to do was a bit of practical work in the marina showing he could steer the ski! No man overboard drill, no radio work!

I reckon jetskis should have a different class of licence, as I think they might do in other states. However, at the moment in WA if you get your ticket on a ski it qualifies you for a boat. No worries!
