Yeah I did a set for my young fella last year. Put the inside a little mesh cage so the cats etc can't drag them away and stuck on top of a bull ants nest. Took about a week and they were perfect as the flesh dries as the clean it off.

You just slice around the jaw

You just slice around the jaw bone and pull it out? I've never caught a shark but when I do, I want a trophy to remember it by!

As above, but also brace the jaws with a piece of dowel holding the jaw open (vertical) and a piece across the jaw aswell. I have done a couple ( one tiger and a mako ) properly in formaldehyde. But for smaller sharks the ant trick works fine. Good fun, just watch them teeth!!

Ants

Tue, 2014-03-25 21:47

If you want a set of jaws that's going to last don't put them on an ants nest.
Ants do too good a job and eat the gristle out in the jaw hinges causing them to fall apart at a later stage.

The best way is the hard way, take the time and use a sharp knife and pare away all the meat down through the second layer of skin making sure you don't cut under the edges of the teeth or they will drop out in time.
To cut them out take the whole face off then cut the jaws out roughly then trim off the excess. Once done place a stick or prop to keep them open and another to spread them and leave them to dry.

Make sure when they are drying that they are out of reach of dogs because they love them , teeth and all!!

 Well the ants worked

Wed, 2014-03-26 05:20

Well the ants worked perfectly for the set I did John. As I said  the flesh dried over the days the ants couldn't get the tougher stuff off in close to the teeth only the peripheral flesh. I'll put a pic up if I can be arsed lol.  I guess if you have a larger set then you would take the time as you mentioned and do them properly

you'll find the the sun/heat

Tue, 2014-03-25 22:40

you'll find the the sun/heat dries the flesh before ants can clean it up. Plus metro ants dont have he flesh removing power than bull ants do.

I have done a couple jaws already, remove jaws from shark mouth. Use sharp knife/scalpel and remove all flesh/skin/cartledge u can. Will take 1-2 hours. Then position jaws in desired position and leave outside to dry for 2-3 days.

Ants, boling, bleach etc all are unecessary imo.

Remember to use a cage.

I once had a nice set of bronzie jaws in Karratha. Made the big mistake of leaving them out for the ants to eat the meat off and didn't have any cage or mesh over the top of it. Lasted 5 mins on the back lawn before watching a falcon come collect them and fly away with them never to be found again. Lesson learnt.

Another tip dont leave them

Wed, 2014-03-26 08:25

Another tip dont leave them out to dry in full sun on a hot day, google it some people actually keep them in the dark to dry and mist them every so often

A nice big set of jaws of mine shrunk quite alot and also went out of shape :(

lesson learnt.

We just cut all we can off and then throw them in a big pot and boil the flesh off. Works well for us!

That's what we used to do with the damaged sets of jaws to get the teeth out, boil them up and pick the teeth out of the goo that is left.

Wouldn't recommend it for a set you would want to keep.

nah, i wouldnt, thats just personal preference though..

6 foot hammerhead took me around 3 hours, do it bit by bit though, do an hour on it then put it in the fridge and do another hour the next day or something..

Very tedious job, sharp knife/scalpel, long nose pliers, nail trimmers are all good tools
