Where and what?

Where does he intend to use it and what species does he want to catch?

The Swan river from my understanding is closed to all amatuer netting and so are most of the beaches north and south of Freo for miles.

Not sure what the minimum mesh size is but its around 2 1/8 - 2 1/4 inch which is ok for whiting but for mullet you will want 3 inch to 3 1/2.

Beware !! there is a lot of opposition to set netting in the Mandurah and Harvey estuary system as well as the Leschnault estuary at Australind.

use set nets in the harvey estuary

for buying them always check the quokka
- also ive seen one advertised every week in the readersmart in the sunday times
- the only places that sell em are down o'connor way im pretyy sure.

this is the fisheries brochure on netting http://www.fish.wa.gov.au/docs/pub/NetFishing/NettingRules2011.pdf

and also you need an additional Netfishing licence to do it legally

Netting

Mon, 2010-10-04 19:31

Nearly everyone has a net up this way Russ, be it a set net, throw net or a smaller mesh one for hauling whiting.

If using a set net there are lots of no go areas plus 400 metres each side of a stream or mouth and no more than 500 metres offshore. The net must be physically checked at least each half an hour so any undersize can be safely released. There is a minimum and maximum size mesh, length and dropm floats on each end with your RFL on them and you must not be further that 100 metres from it at any time its set.

For haul netting the haul rope has a maximum length of around 30 metres[ not 100% sure on this] and the net must be moving at all times while hauling.[so one cannot use it as a stopper while waiting for fish to gather  then closing the shot off]

you can set your net and move more than 100 metres away and is the only exception to the rule.
with set nets (with the exception of the peel harvey) your net must be cleaned on an hourly basis

and you can only set ya net in the peel harvey on wednesday nights
