Scalie prep?
Submitted by Mick71 on Wed, 2011-12-14 09:22
Hi Guys
I caught a couple of scalies to use for bait, I used a couple fresh the same evening and froze the rest. My problem is when I thawed the rest, they were very soft and mushy and didn't last very long. I use some of them whole, and also fillet some and use them on a gang hook set-up.
I was just wondering if there is any special preperation that needs to be done to prevent this, or what kind of rig can I use to stop them coming off in about 2 seconds, or should I just catch them fresh and use them the same day?
Thanks
Mike
P.S. Season greetings to all and their families

best to use fresh
unless you want to salt them to preserve them!

salt
You can 'salt' them and that will toughen them up and you should be able to cast multiple times with them once altd.
Do a search hearabouts re salting your bait.

You can salt them then freeze
You can salt them then freeze or salt once defrosted, this should make them considerably firmer
