Offshore safety gear

Mon, 2011-10-24 10:03

would be the standard radio epirb anchors maybe 100m rope etc..have to be kitted out then I presume you'd be just be pinged for being too far out...they ( police , sea rescue or fisheries ) would all have authority I presume to tell ya to get back inside...or possibly fine you ...if other jetski fishos do go that far out I would think they do it under the radar so to speak...and not publicly state they are contemplating it...I don't think the sea rescue boys would be overly happy coming to get you if you have problems...

How does the Jetski handle

Mon, 2011-10-24 10:48

How does the Jetski handle when a 20-25 knot seabreeze comes in, coupled with a 2m swell? Or the 10 knot easterley picks up to 25?  Or a 30 knot NW squall comes through?

To be honest brody i actualy feel safer on the ski out in the ocean when its ruff, heaps of power at your finger tips and pretty manouverable (spelling?!) ive been out on my ski in conditions i would never wanna be in in my boat. Although i wasnt fishing when out there, just jumping waves for some thrills.

Sounds ideal. I was just trying to get an idea how the jetski handles shit weather, as I have only used them in good weather along the beach. If you are going to do it, I'd suggest making sure you have every piece of safety gear needed, this can be found on the DPI website, for your own safety.

Something to think about but would be the fact that if you do need to be rescued for any reason, then there are going to be questions asked as to why you were 9 miles offshore as the rules cleary state "Vessels under 3.75 metres in length (including personal watercraft) may not go further to sea than five nautical miles from the mainland."

legalities

Wed, 2011-10-26 21:43

Yer thats the thing ,the legality of the matter .Am just struggling to find out what the punishments going to be if i get caught out further than skis are allowed .  Have bin on a NZ ski fishing forum an those boys are goin 30nm out , lads over east are 20nm off sure . some american forums the guys are taking extra fuel they going that far (on a nice day i reckon i could get 100 kms using the throttle wisely)Have a good selection of safety gear type 1 life jacket , e pirb, marine radio , flares , tow rope ,GPS, depth sounder ,  even a compact battery jump box . As for how does the handeling go in rough weather, ski handels it well, you just get WETTER , big swell no probs ,wind chop can be tho .
