Redfin Perch (South-West Australia)

Had a break from the big land based fish and took a break back on the fresh water.

We went to a freshwater Dam, which was about 1 and a half hours away from Perth... we never tried this dam before so for most of the day, until 3PM, we were looking for fishing spots, targeting and trying to find the Redfin Perch & Rainbow Trout. We tried fishing the snags, open pool-like areas, everything!

We caught nothing all day, we were stressed that we weren't going to find the fish!

We decided to find a new spot, even though this spot looked like a perfect place to hold some fish in the freshwater... As we started the 4x4 drive, we went down this big trail which was wet and really soft mud, we thought it would be alright until our back wheels just sunk tire-deep into it!

we were so bogged, that not even the tow-service could pull us out, so we were over it for the day, it was getting cold and dark and everyone was tired, with no fish!

as the tow-service left when the sun started going down, with no way of moving the car, i saw splashes in the water... it looked like rain drops, but that's when I noticed that it wasn't raining...

i grabbed my rod using a Rapala X-Rap lure, ran back down to the dam and started casting... first cast I landed a nice Redfin Perch, one after the other! 7 cast 7 fish! - They must have been in a feeding frenzy during Dusk!?

it got dark so we had to leave and abandon the beast of a Hilux at the dam until we could think of a way to get it out... it wasn't moving anywhere! We left the car at the dam and drove home in my friends car...

The following day, Paul, my girlfriend Ruby and I drove back down to the dam, we dug trenches using shovels under the front tires of the bogged Hilux and placed two scaffolding planks under each tire. The back tires and back diff of the car were so bogged in mud that it made a hole-like area which filled up with water like a pond over night.

So, using the shovels, I then had to build and form a stream to drain all the water that was covering the whole back end of the car. It worked perfectly! the stream started flowing into the dam, draining all the water... This took alot of work.

We then tied Pauls 4x4 drive to the car with a chain and towed it while accelerating in the bogged Hilux. The front wheels caught traction on the scaffold and got right up! The car was successfully retrieved!

It proves that even if you feel like all options are over and you have tried everything, that their is still more you can always do as a team if you take your time and put your mind to it!

It is a shame to hear that

It is a shame to hear that there are now redfin in Logue Brook Dam, being that Logues is the only dam open to freshwater fishing at the moment I presume that is where you were fishing...

If it isnt listed above there is a total closed season to all freshwater fishing, whether you get only redfin or not.

Yep

Yep new rule from the changes in 2013. No fishing at all in closed waters out of season.

Another interesting change was, you are now allowed to fish the feeder streams to the "open all year dams and rivers." previously these were closed to fishing out of season.

PS: Nice Redfin mate, i only ever seem to catch the runts .

Should invest in some maxtrax or treds. I hope I am allowed to name them here? i have some and they are worth their weight in gold. second you lose traction you chuck them under the wheels and it gets you moving every time. I haven't had a bad bog since. except maybe once at logue brooke trying to cross a river. the front wheels sunk in as soon as i went for it and it was all over. maybe with lockers i wouldve got out but will never find out now. i had a support vehicle that pulled me out. got the attention of about 15 people that all came out of nowhere to watch me getting rescued. still havent caught a fish there.
