Red or Saddletail?

Managed to get out on the nepe tide on Sunday morning. Had the wife and kids on board started well but then the breeze picked up. Changed from being out where we wanted to be with time up our sleeves to getting there about 30 minutes late. The wind was screaming but there would be no rest for the weather beaten crew. With that the wife got the rods ready as I circled looking for something on the bottom. We found the ground, threw the drift anchor and started to fish. It didn't take long and the kids needed seeing to as they are 6 and 3, the wife tendered to their needs and I kept fishing. Bang, that was it, I had hooked up to something descent. Lately we had been a good source of food for the sharks so my wife asked if it was another one and I said not this time as there was a lot of head shaking going on, some what like a big pinky. It took about 10 minutes and she was on board, my first K town size red or perhaps saddletail perch. The rest of the day didn't hold a great deal more for us except looking for more ground. The wife did manage to land a good size trout and that was her first trout, a good day for all. Can anyone clarify for me if it is a red or a saddletail please?

Pretty sure its a saddletail, body shape a bit wrong for a red and seems to have a dark saddle on the tail wrist.

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Thanks for clearing that one up for me. I did the resaerch into Large Mouth Nannygai and found that they are Saddletailed Seaperch. Could anyone tell me if Reds loose there colour and end up a little dull like the Saddletail please

Tue, 2012-03-06 18:55

the only diff as the reds get older the stripe part of it fades, they still stay red. biggest we have caught was 8.5kg and it was the same color as one that was just size
