Putting Braid On Penn 9500ss
Submitted by ProFish on Tue, 2014-05-06 13:09
Hi All ,
Was thinking of putting braid on my Penn 9500ss , are these reels suited for braid . I will be using it for bottom bouncing ,trolling lures & light jigging .
I was thinking 60 lb ? , any suggestions . I used to have it on a 7ft penn power stick until I snaped the end off . Any suggestions for a rod to suit .
Thanks in advance .
Cheers Ray

The old style SS werent the best for braid as they dont load on the line very well, having said that, I would still prefer the braid. Sometimes the line will pull off the spool in a few loops and tackle, but its not a huge problem. I cant comment on the later reels

it doesn't get much use anymore but has literally caught tonnes of YFT/Macks and whatever.
mainly used mine for topwater but the reels are bulletproof and will handle braid easily.
Edit: what trymyluck says above is very true. the line lay is pretty bad ....be it braid or mono....but if you are reasonably experienced with the reel this shouldn't be a prob

Putting Braid on Penn 9500ss
Thanks Guy's ,
Have had the reel since mid 1990's , fished alot in Broome & Exmouth & caught lots of fish on it , but always used MONO . Just starting to use Braid.
Will give it a go & see how it handles .

just realized the penn power stick pro 205mm is what I used mine on mainly. its a pretty old rod and like I said doesn't get much use nowdays.
.....pretty fast taper but heaps down low and good for stopping decent size tuna. (and marlin....lol)

hard to get a rod to troll, BB and jig with...really have to pick what you want to do most and then choose and appropriate rod
