Pilbara light jigging

Well Glenn and myself took a look at the weather forecast on Friday evening. The weather off Dampier looked a bit iffy and was supposed to blow up in the arvo, further south it looked much better so we made the call to head down there for some light jigging. I'd been GT popping for the past 3 weekends in a row so it was good for a change and rest so I'm fully charged for next weekend when Kasey arrives :)

The drive down was great, and there appeared to be no wind when we arrived at the ramp. One look at the very lumpy horizon and my thoughts changed dramatically. As we lauched and headed out of the river mouth we faced a stiff westerly that was kicking the water up real bad. The water was like mud for as far as you can see. We managed to limp out to one of the closest islands which felt like it took forever.

We found a lee behind a nice rock on the island and I jumped in to find some crays. The water depth was only 2m and I could barely see the bottom. When I headed close to the rock I noticed a school of big jacks so I went back to grab my gun. I had a few shots but with the vis so bad it was near on impossible to connect.

We decided to head out to another island a little further out in the hope of finding some clearer water. I jumped into a spot where we'd caught heaps of crays before but the vis was only marginally better and it was deeper. I struggled to find the bommies we'd got crays at last time and it was hard work swimming against the surging swell pounding the back of the island.

We headed out to another spot, an isolated rock out in about 4m. It was a little clearer and we threw a few small poppers around on the light gear. Glenn got hit by a GT that would smoked him on the gear he was using but didn't connect. We caught a couple of small GTs and Big Eyes and what we're both sure was a blue fin trevally but it got off near the boat.

I jumped in for a dive and smashed a 48cm trout and then we cruised off in search for some slightly deeper water so we could jig. We found some nice looking ground and first drop I got nailed almost instantly. Gave me curry on PE3 so I put the brakes on and when I landed it I noticed a straightened hook on the Jig - a blue-lined emperor was the culprit.

Next drop Glenn got whacked by a nice trout which was 50cm, great fun on his PE2 gear. We continued moving around and jigging wherever it looked decent. Managed to pull more trout (undersize), several rankins, other snappers, plent of cod and a baby red. The best thing is we were using light gear and jigging in water around 15m - good fun :)

I was very dissapointed to find out when we got home that Dampier had glorious weather all day and we had crappy weather down where we were - the complete opposite to what the forecast was meant to be... grrr

We had the GT gear packed too, and we had planned to go to you know where if they'd got the bloody forecast right!

Light jigging was the only alternative given the circumstances.

Not realy having a dig ,but

Sun, 2009-03-22 20:51

Not realy having a dig ,but spearing is select fishing and saying that an 48cm trout was smashed by a spear is an little understatement.(Nemos mate is all alone now)

whats worse, taking an 80cm

Sun, 2009-03-22 21:24

whats worse, taking an 80cm breeder out or one of the fifty billion 48cm trout out there (jay only has a small family to feed)

nemo definately is not alone

personally i try find the 80cm one but hey, he only took the one fish and there is definately no shortage of trout round here mate. He did take only one (legal) size fish

anyway, sorry for hijacking your thread jay

off topic here, good post!

o one more note, i do a lot of spearing as well mate, i read te mags too and the old arguement of select fishing will start being valid when spearo mags stop publishing pics of huge GT's, sambos, and saily's that have been selectivly speared

Calm down craig Just because

Calm down craig

Just because someone dosnt agree with you dosnt give you the right to start atacking them personally mate

End of the day he took one legal sized trout

one fish which is under his bag limit ok

you can sledge my fishing techniques too mate, double twisties and the like, dont really see what that has to do with jay taking one trout but if thats your way of trying to win a topical conversation thats fine

you win!

Im happy with my fishing mate, having heaps of fun

your son will have fun fishing for trout in the future if there were more people around like jay buddy, think his reputation speaks for itself in terms of his responsible fishing.

Fish conservation is someting we both practice very seriously thanks craig

try not to read to much into posts mate, and no need to attack anyones integridy either.

that sort of stuff ruins sites

cheers

Brad

Interesting

Mon, 2009-03-23 09:48

Very interesting argument you put foward there Craig.  Undecided

Upset over someone taking a 48cm trout I mean for f*rks sake..  If you want to complain about something, talk to me about the 12 60cm spangled emperor thrown in the Exmouth bins yesterday, not filleted, not bled, just thrown away.  Someone taking a fish over legal size for a feed is fine, but if thats not up to your standards, then its best off you stop visiting this site.

Cheers,

Adam

Unbelieveable

Mon, 2009-03-23 19:00

Geez craig, you really should have listened to your mother when you were younger, if you havent got anything nice to say, dont say anything at all!!! and as for using twisted leaders and the like, the amount of money jay and brad spend on these poppers, i'd be using everything i can not only to land a decent fish but not to lose these poppers, especially in such shallow water where the gt's are being caught

Legal

crikey

as far as im concerned the fish is over the legal size limit and knowing jay it deffinently wouldnt have been wasted.. there for no reason to argue about the size of the trout he shot.... didnt really read anywhere he boasted about it either just stated he smashed/speared/fingered watever u wanna call it a small coral trout.... good post anyway jay where u fishing out from the fortesque river? i planned to dive some of the island there on our last montes trip but didnt get the chance as weather came up and didnt look to inviting..

Cheers Poddy

Nice article Jay

Tue, 2009-03-24 09:29

Nothing wrong with a legal trout. Enough for a feed and nothing wasted. I posted somewhere else about the jigs mate. Got to love them. Not sure which is the better at the moment. Still love the Raba raba's.

Cheers

I had the hooks straighted

Tue, 2009-05-12 11:21

I had the hooks straighted on the raba rabas up at exmouth, not on fish though, on the bottom. The gillies octas though, they just pinged when that happened.

Not sure but next trip I might favour the rabas if I had some spare hooks to rig on them, probably beats losing a lot of lures.
