Petiton to STOP new fishing laws

G'day to all

I would just like to bring to everyone's attention a petition that is going to hopefully be at most tackles shops about the fishing management paper 252, in particular to the

* Proposed Changes in State-wide Possession Limit Reductions and the Splitting of the Possession Limit.

* Reducing the Recreational Bag Limits.

We are trying to keep them as they currently are.  If you see one in the store please sign it as we need hard copy signatures for a petition and it will effect everyone.

If you would like to help and your local tackle shop does not have one put a post on here with a contact and I will arrange something.  This is being driven through the C.P.B.C. sports fishing group.

The changes that they are proposing have no data to back the reason for changes up.  Now we are asking the Legislative Assembly

* To vote down/amend the proposed changes and guidelines proposed by the fisheries minister Hon Norman Moore MLC, in line with the above     points of contention.

We all need to voice our opinion or the very very loud lobby groups who want all fishing band will change the rules under our noses.

Thank you

The worst thing

Wed, 2012-08-22 05:07

A quote from Richardharris51 in http://fishwrecked.com/forum/bag-limits-slashed-wtf

'The question I pose now is :

If you had a vote on no fish zones v's tougher bag limits I'n WA which one would you choose??

For me it's a no Brainer.'

What a pity, looks like we are set for both.

So, 10kg (fillets) of prize

Wed, 2012-08-22 08:42

So, 10kg (fillets) of prize demersal species such as dhui, snapper, baldchin, and a further 10kg of anything else. And no posting fillets home in a styrofoam box.

sounds like its aimed at the 'freezer brigade'? Maybe its just coz i dont catch enough but this won't affect me at all personally.

Wasn't this brought up back in april or whatever? I remember a few comments like "well now it's not even worth the money to go fishing up north if i can only bring back 20kg blah blah"

NOT THE WORST THING

Wed, 2012-08-22 17:25

The petition is to leave it as it is now and get some data first to think we may have to chose bitween fish zones or bag limits should not be the question why should we have to trade any thing i though a trade was i give you some thing and get some thing back not we are taking ever  things you chose what you lost  the freezer brigade bs has been done to death 20kgs is not a freezer full

Mate, alot of us dont support the changes

Wed, 2012-08-22 18:19

I personally support leaving things the way they are and would sign a petition.  I think assessing the changes made over the last 5 years to see if they have worked would be a start.  I suggest reading all the comments from the Feb thread to see that there is alot of support for leaving things the way they are.

I was just pointing out that it is not a 'new' change since it was announced in Feb, and that the period for public comment had closed.

The quote I provided was to demonstrate that indeed these changes are the 'thin edge of the wedge', only 7 months ago the 'what would you prefer, a lock out, or bag limit cut' question seemed to be reasonable, but now it is blatantly apparent that it would never be one or the other, meaning their only intent was to lock everyone out by hook or by crook. I thought after the three month demersal closure, introduction of RBFL, changes to possession/boat limits etc that the authorities would be satisfied and would use the scientific method to observe the changes they had made to assess if they were effective, but it appears that science no longer plays a part in the assessment of the fisheries viability.  The fish species they are talking about are by definintion, slow growing, late breeding species, so how could changes be noticed within 5 years without a scientific study (even though anecdotal evidence from fishers here show that juvenile dhuies and pinkies are almost in plague proportions) it is becoming clearer by the day that the only outcome the greens, SOML, PEW etc will be satisfied with is a total closure of all rec fishing while maintaining a remarkable silence on issues like the supertrawler.

God help all fishers, because noone else seems to care.

P.S I also dislike the recent hatred of fishing for the freezer(because it is 'Socially Unacceptable'  as outlined in the http://fishwrecked.com/forum/bag-limits-slashed-wtf thread, I see nothing wrong with going on holidays once or twice a year and bringing home fish to eat.  As a small boat fisher, I cannot regularly target Demersals without going on someone elses boat or a charter, and fail to see the difference in going once or twice a year, getting fish for the freezer to last 6 months or the locals who go each week and take a large fish per trip. I suggest a tagged licensing system to limit every licensed fishers yearly take, and do not support the banning of unaccompanied fish on transport as it would be easy enough to implement a reporting process and control it rather than ban it outright.

All these restrictive rules

Wed, 2012-08-22 21:11

All these restrictive rules do is make criminals out of honest well meaning recreational fishemen and women.

It is still easy enough to hook a 20kg + fish in deep water and by the time you get it on board your boat it is just about dead bar the dying bit with it's guts/eyes etc.

bulging out of it's orfices and in no way able to send it back to live another hour!

So what to do to stay within these draconian rules???

In the mean time the commercial fisher boat license holders pull 5 ton up every day of the week in the very same area.

If you really wanted to do

Thu, 2012-08-23 16:53

If you really wanted to do something about it you probably should have filled out the questioaire and given your views when it was open for public submission, think the horse bolted quite some time ago.

Marine parks is a diffrent matter, stand up and be counted and turn up with your boats for the rally next wednesday, you may be too late for the 252 paper but it is not too late to show you care by turning up to the rally, might want to let all of the guys at the cockburn powerboat association know as well. No point yelling and screeming when it is all too late. The time is now, not three months down the track when it is too late!
