I think Bob used all of his favour with the public in the old growth forest campaign in Tas. But now he isnt just taking on loggers in Tas, he wants to take on every Fisher in Oz. The battle begins i guess :)

ok... so lets say half of Australian waters become marine parks, which i reckon is a MASSIVE over estimation. That would mean a total 15% of our waters become "no take zones". Not that big a deal... still a lot of water left :-)

And yes, I realise there are a whole range of measures that can be taken to preserve fish stocks, but you gotta admit marine parks are not a bad place to start.

Also, the argument that these "no take zones" would be those areas used by recreational fisherman no longer holds water, after seeing that the coral sea marine park allowes recreational fishing in those areas nearest Queensland.

Sun, 2010-08-15 20:57

The Greens have asked for 30% of each marine reserve, not 30% of the entire coastline.

Fisheries are trying to cut the catch by 50% on 05-06 figures, and you can't realistically drop the bag limit any more, there is already a closed season, what else is there?

Of course you may be one of the people that would rather fish all the fish out, so we can then move on and take up other hobbies, like golf or something?

yep, spot on mate. Im supporting the marine parks and the very small percentage "no take zones" that is being proposed.

I reckon if people really checked out what is going on rather than believing the adds, most people on here would be supportive as well.

cheers

Tue, 2010-08-17 15:01

Well, its more that I don't really believe the libs know the greens platform better than they do, so I wouldn't be taking their word for it.

Another way to look at it is that a fisho that isn't pro-conservation is probably just a moron ;)

yep

Gotta admit I was concerned when people were suggesting that the greens proposed no take zones for 30% of our waters, but after reading their policies and sending some emails to the Greens to clarify certain points its become clear thats not the case. They nearly lost my vote for a while, so im glad I went to the effort of finding out for myself.

Bob Brown!

I thought you called yourself a farmer back in the day?

Most of the cow cockies i know have holiday houses with boats in primo fishing areas and back in the day, raped the sea because they were sick of eating red meat!

Cuthbad, please have you seen where they are proposing the recreational fishing zones?

If you didnt know its places that you cant reach or its a total wasteland...

dont believe all that you

Sat, 2010-08-14 20:56

dont believe all that you read Freo Boi, the map doing the rounds on fishing websites (includint this one) is not official, or even close to factual.

Also, how are they gonna make the recreational fishing zones hard to reach when only 30% of marine parks are gonna be no take zones? So like I said, if HALF of Australian waters become marine parks, which is hard to imagine, only 15% will be no take zones! How does that only leave areas out of reach or wasteland?

I realise the greens have not done a great job of explaining their policy, but other patrties have not helped the situation by pushing info that is incorrect.

cheers

Our fisheries are declining. Simple as that. The only long term solution will involve short term drastic measures.

I'll support any measure, regardless of personal sacrifice, if it means my son can enjoy catching fish when he is my age.

No mate if you live in Australia you got no hope for your kids..

Foreign investors have bought out all our major suppliers of quality meats and vegetable farming land..

The 2 monopolies that rule our choice of purchase..

Import all of the food from Asia where there is no Quality insurance!

And they throw in boatloads of ppl to produce and maintain all our polution free stock.

To work for sweet f**k all and make a 500%+ profit while they import massive poluted crap and make a 1000% profit

(im a fisherman the sizes of percentage of profit may be exaggerated)...

hmm, thats one perspective I guess. Still, nowhere I would rather live mate :-)

By the two monopolies do you mean coles and woolies? I thought coles was owned by westfarmers and was therefore Aussie owned? Or is westfarmers owned by some international company?

MAAAAATE!

Sun, 2010-08-15 21:17

Duh the Aussie owned companies are importing produce from International Countries..

(That dont worry about our standards of law. To produce human consumable food).. They buy It by the container load that has to be severely fumigated so it doesnt disrupt and contaminate our exported produce..............

Oh mate Export isnt beer incase you that die hard AussieUndecided..

Ok ill put it into simple context!

Sun, 2010-08-15 21:34

Its way cheaper to import shiploads of produce over to Western Australia..

Then to pay Aus trucking companies to import it Interstate..(When International companies are Exporting it by the shipload out)..

Dont Worry mate just keep living in your bubble and take it..

Because if you stand up to anything here these days you are going to get deleted...

Food for thought

Mon, 2010-08-16 22:48

Whatever its starting point and expressed intention, the end of the censor's road is repression of 'dangerous' ideas - not only about sex but about morals, politics, art and life. Opposition to censorship must inevitably involve us in defending things and people whom we may dislike and disapprove of (sometimes passionately). Voltaire's well known saying that 'I detest what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it' may seem trite to us but is as (oppersite) or apposite? as it ever was."

Australia 2010!!!!!!!!!!
