One of those days

Had a fish yesterday with Tim-O and Beau, great to meet you guys finally. Plan was for a jig and stickbait day around the Rotto area.

Should have realised how the day would go when I went to flick my jig in the water on the first drop of the day and the jig and assist hooks departed the split ring before they even hit the water and sunk to a watery grave......haha, rooky mistake, the swivel had gone most of the way through the slit ring when I put the jig on and then slipped the rest of the way........you wanna see the look on the face of Beau and Tim-O....like, who the heck is this PLONKER......and what are we doing fishing with him.

It got worse 5 minutes later, Tim-O was wondering why so much line was going out on the drop until he realised he had wrapped about 50m of premium braid around my prop (motor was in reverse as it was pretty ordinary early on......). 20 minutes later and a few back spasms and the braid was cut......hmmm.

At this stage, Beau was looking like the Grand Chief Poobah of fishing and boating, until he had several bouts of immediate spew activity that came on in seconds......the good, the bad and the ugly turned into the bad, the bad and the bad.......

All in all, we could only be described as a rabble............haha.

We proceeded to drop on about 30 spots during the day with jig and soft plastics, several of these spots have produced numerous duies over 90 cm and up to 101 in in the past......nada. Sounder was dead, very little activity, bugger all bait, bugger all fish. I recon bait would have raised a few fish as all the activity was very close to the bottom and it appears no fish were feeding (a bad sign for jigs) , but it was a bait free day.....much to Tim-O's chagrin.

Checked out West End, nothing doing apart from a rat king to Beau on a bullchop and some pretty friggen hairy moments with some bloody big sets of waves (wont be doing that again), and apart from one mid water sizzling to Beau that ended in tears, a few very undersize dhuies, sergeant majors and a thumping western King wraase on jig (haha) we caught nothing....

Still, we had a good chat, a few beers and still had a nice day. Its not all about catching fish......ahhhh stuff it, who am I kidding, the day was crap, I hate not catching fish!

170 km for nil.......it happens.

Tim-O, Beau, great to meet you lads.

Cheers

Thanks for the trip out John, was good to finally meet ya after a couple years of contact! We did the miles, and everything we absolutely could to get fish on the deck but it never really eventuated, was just one of those days!
Would be interesting to know how others went yesterday?

Swompa I wasnt even seasick, just couldnt stomach Tims dodgey food. It was literally "Geeze, I feel sick all of a sudden," 2 seconds later BLURGHHHH, then I was fine until I ate some more dodgey food ;)

It was actually blowing its tits off in the morning, what ever its blowing in Cockburn Sound add at least 10 knots for north of the river!

for us down here with great readings on the sounds but very little interest.

Ended up switching to bait and scratched out a mixed bag limit of small-mid sized demersals.

Very strong current was our theory for why it was shutdown.

i found once you pushed past 42m (roughly) of two rocks the current goes to shit, everything inside that depth is a south west drift as per normal with easterly

I did my best to get the upper hand early, with a bit of sneeky split ring sabotage and the handing out of baited rolls but John and Beau had a similar plan and got to work with a Beau launching a tactical query asking me to elaborate about my dhu dominace in past trips while I was dropping my jig. This allowed for my concentration lapse and when my line had reached the prop, John's move to put it in gear(wasnt fishing because he was searching for his jig bag that Beau had hidden) took me out of action for a while. These blokes jigged on hard as I straddled the leg for a good 10 min unravelling my line from the prob, but to no avail, the sunscreen on their line that I had managed to add by making it look like I was curiously checkin out their knots after having applyed some to my face and neck was obviously working. After sortin out the prop mess and retyin my leader on, I quickly realised I only had 45m of line left and conveniently, after learing of this, all of the spots John took us to next were in 50m plus, bam I was out of the game, my only hope was poor results by the other two to avoid the pants down penalty of no fish. John had spotted a long blob midwater and with Beah fishing pe2, it was a clever move by John to suggest we pull up and try another spot. The plan worked and Beau hooked the unstoppable and was loosing line quick, It was headed for the reef and bang, busted iff leader and all, nice work John, we shared a wink. We all new now, this was going to be a tactical battle. I had confidence in my winning edge rolls, but it turns out Johns guts were resilient, and Beau being floored with roll ralphing sickness was also now thinking about defending as he was out of attack. Grimacing with stomach pain, he pleeded with John to go hit the reefs around rotto, he was thinking the seas and the swell were having an effect and poor Beau wanted to seek shelter in close to the island. Being the sympathising man he is, John agreed, this took John out of the jigging game, well done Beau I thought and I was now with a chance to land a pants down saving fish. With John at the wheel me and Beau went to work casting, but John not being able to fish, kept us out of casting range of the surface feeding fish. Beau hooked up and I look to see John unhappy with himself. It was up to me now. "Get the net!" was Beaus call as the fish was near and I conveniently fumbled getting the net out as Beau could feel a surge from his guts. He wasted no time and decided to leader the fish in which cased the kingy to shake free then Beau emptied his guts again. Everyone looking relieved, it was on to the next reef. Keeping us a fair distance away, John was hoping for over exertion casting and for one of us to snap off on a cast, cheeky fucker. The boat then drifted closer at the time I was changing to a heavier lure. John saw the opportunity for a cast as the fish were within range. Beaus chunder guts were slowing him down, and by now was in the fetal pisition, groaning on the deck, John was in attack mode. When Johns stickbait landed in the strike zone, I knew I had to act. I stepped into the helm as I yelled "Swell, hold on!" and throttled it out of there, causing John to land flat on his arse beside Beau. There was no swell, but they could not see from down on the deck and quickly applauded my life saving efforts. It was a pants down saving effort. Having taken the bait, John decided it was too risky to fish close to the reefs and canned it. We headed home having not won but at the same time neither of us lost. We were against each other, trying to win, tring not to lose, it was ONE OF THOSE DAYS

Sometimes you just have to use bait John...

Sun, 2015-05-03 20:52

Fished our Club competition yesterday. For us the sounder was alive...in fact one of the best shows I've seen for a long while, particularly good in 80-90m. Current was awkward at times. Beau, not sure about your comment of strong winds in the morning....we didn't use the sea anchor all day. 7 size Dhuies...thankfully all but 2 successfully release weighted (these were in 40 odd metres not >80m). Couple of 5kg Pinkies, plus Red Snapper and Blackarse. One of the better shows we saw on the sounder in 38m turned about to be a killer school of Tailor around the half kilo mark.
