Occy for KG's

Hpoing to get out Sunday and try and bag a few XOS deepwater KG's. Scouting prospective ground off Peron in 35-40m. Heard that snelled Occy is the go. Unfamilar with skinning the stuff, as always used it unskinned. Any tips for a hassle free skinning session would b appreciated.

Cheers,

Ado

Skinning Ocky!

Thanks fella's, having the right knife and technique makes a hard job easy. Feel free to call me at the shop but showing/explaining is the better option Ado!

Not too hard

Just make a cut down the tenticle and then roll the occy against the knife.  Just be careful in rolling seas!

Gave the task to my dekkie.

Mon, 2009-02-02 11:07

Gave the task to my dekkie. He has all fingers and opposable thumbs in tack still. Pretty fiddly, but not that hard. Only reward was 1 solitary XOS KG :-( from 40m. Will have to chat Ryan as I must be doing something wrong...surely?

Occy

Mon, 2009-02-02 11:39

Can't say I've ever had much luck with Occy for KG's, always find squid a better option as its that little bit softer for them to mouth and break down.

Had a few crew offer that suggestion, and I have always normally used it inshore. Ryan suggested the occy as tougher

factors

Guess it all comes into how they are feeding, we all know their eating habits change on a daily basis so you just never know whats going to work.  Just have to get out there and test em. ;)

KG's & ocky baits!

Sat, 2009-02-07 16:53

Squid is a tougher bait and ocky is softer. I prefer skinned ocky as its easier for the big KG's to suck it in. I dont use anything else now after trying different baits and the small ends of the tenticles are to be used also...unskinned that is!

I've just got some Local Craypot Ocky back in stock @ Oceanside so if any members are wanting quality stuff nows the time!
