Night dive 08/08/10

Went for a night dive out of Bicton baths on Sunday night, water was pretty cold and vis not so great though was still a good dive.

Ended up getting about 1kg of prawns and 4 scallops. The scallops were awesome so will make more of an effort to try and find more next time. Saw a few huge crabs though didn't have the catch bag so left them there for next time!

There are lots more scallops

Tue, 2010-08-10 11:02

There are lots more scallops down the bicton baths end, then the blackwall reach end.

I've taken a few of those mantis shrimps, but they're too hard to peel so I just leave them alone now.

Yeah I think so, peeling it was a drama so will leave them alone from now on. Are there any other good spots to dive for scallops?

Bicton is good but you need to swim nearly all the way across the river and it usually gets better the further you go accross

I'd love to dive for scallops, but there are bugger all around, and thos esmall rough-shelled ones are small =(

Apparently the maritime image trawls a few as a bit of a how-to for the students. I'd love to know the xact spots myself, all I know is north of Rotto in 30m and you don;t get much bottom time @ 30m!

Actually its more of something they do with fishery students I guess?

They trawl them up, as is done commercially. However, seeing as I don't own a trawler, I'd plan on diving the coords, if only I could get them ;)

I had a labourer who was doing that exact same course. He reckons they used to hammer gage roads and all they would catch is baby rays and port jacksons.

I got told about 4 miles north of Rotto, no doubt gage roads is a wasteland.
