Yes there are duel batteries

Yes there are duel batteries with a 4 way rotory switch, the boat is 5 years old and being a newbie I assume the following seqence:

Pos1 = start motor

Both = switch to both when motor running

Pos2= swich for sounder/GPS when motor not running

Pos1 = switch back to start motor

Is this correct?

the EBJS is rate at 400A do you know what the starting current of a 140 4 stroke johnsonis? it does not mention this in the manual

TIA

should be 1 start batt, 2

should be 1 start batt, 2 both batts, 2 batt and off

no idea wat it would pull but 400A would be plenty.

Best thing is start and run on both then switch to 2nd battery when u pull up then when you come back in go back to both but always charge them before you go out

battery switch

Wed, 2009-12-30 13:14

The battery switch should be 4 position  , OFF , battery 1 , Both 1 + 2 and the Battery 2

1 Battery should be big enough to start motor and run electronics for the day, the idea is to have a good / charged battery in reserve

I generally start the day on # 1 and run around, fish and dive and then on the way in change to # 2 just to check operation etc,  next time out start on 2 and change to 1  the selection of both1 and 2 i assume is to charge both or have extra power on hand if using a electric winch

Never run it on both when motor running

If either of your batteries has a fault it can drag down the other one.

We have the same style of colhersy switch - we alternate use of the batteries every trip BUT if the engine is hard to start after a long brake we then swithc to both batteries but only for starting ...........when the engine is running you can simply turn switch either to battery one or two as the connections are made before the old connection is broken.

Always switch to OFF when you store the boat ashore to avoid any earth leakage faults dragging down and flattening the battery left on.

It is unlikely that you

It is unlikely that you alternator will have enough output to charge both batteries at the same time.  Might be worth investing in a dual battery regulator.  It will charge one and when that is full it will auto switch to charge the other.  Run all electronics on the house battery only and use the start battery for starts only.  The prices have come down alot recently.

In the meantime make sure you charge the batteries regularly so that they don't go flat.  Storing flat batteries will just kill them. Run out on one and back on the other.

Be very careful switching

Be very careful switching between batteries, quite a few switches you can buy specifically warn against doing that while the motor is running. Only certain types let you do it with the motor running. If you ignore this warning, you can blow a bunch of electronics.
