New Trailer ?
Submitted by Bloke on Sat, 2008-07-05 22:25
I'm thinking about buying or getting a new trailer built for my boat, I
reckon the one under it is past restoration and think it would probably
end up costing as much as a replacement.
Should I go for a Tandem trailer?
What sort of money would I be looking at for a tandem with electric winch?
Anyone know who the best people are to deal with? preferaby SOR but if cost and quality is worth it I dont mind travelling.
It will be used for a 20ft Star boat and I'm wondering if it will need
to have trailer brakes, I tow it with a Nissan Pathfinder.
All info/advise will be much appreciated.
Cheers, Allan

definatly need brakes ...
definatly need brakes ... legally you need break away electrics with both axles being braked if over 2 ton (would be bloody close) and yeah tandem is a lot easier and safer .. as for electric winches .. if ya insist on one go the good ($800) ones ... the cheap ones are crap . ive got a 25 foot ali and just use a manual 3 stage (1-1 . 5-1 . 15-1) think its brand is alco or trojan ....
ps for the recond ive got mechanical brakes on mine as they last longer . but are not legal

Tandem
Pretty sure it would have to be a tandem with that size boat.
Will need the hydraulic/mechanical brakes as well. Wouldnt think its going to be heavy enough to need electric brakes.
If the trailer is built for the boat I wouldnt think youll need an electric winch if the rollers are kept lubed.

Thanks
I reckon I'd be driving it on the trailer anyway so I guess an electric winch would end up just being a waste of money, however I just want the easiest way to launch and retieve as I will be going solo a fair bit.
I'll only have a budget of around 2k to 2.5k to do it so not sure if it will even happen yet, so I'll be hunting around the boat shops come monday unless someone knows the best place for me to go.
Cheers, Allan.

good luck with finding one
good luck with finding one at that price .... i did a rebuild on mine a few months back .... new axles, hubs, brakes, springs etc. and that cost me $1200 at cost price. the chassis on mine was good but just needed a rebuild of the running gear ..
as for ease of use .. just set it up with multi rollers - nice and easy - i can launch and retrieve mine by myself .
if ya find something new at a good price post it up as its the time of year for these sorts of rebuilds

I've just started building my own for a 6m glass boat I reckon I can do it for about 14-1500 the steel cost me 600 the rest is rollers etc I'm keeping my running gear as its quite new same thing would cost at least 4500 ready made.
To all the virgins..............Thanks for nothing!

5K!!!! ? "choke"
Looks like I best have a rethink about the whole situation, maybe I'll look around for a decent 2nd hand and rebuild it slowly.
Will be making a few calls tomorrow but if 5k is it I wont be heading down that track.
Thanks guys.

Don't worry!
I would be more worried about the Pathfinder - i'm driving a 2005 model and it can out drink me, which is no mean achievement. Towing the mate's Quintrex Abalone to Denham in 3 weeks - if the bank loan comes through.

HUH??
The car aint the problem mate, I've had it 9yrs now and still love it.
The problem is carrying the boat not towing it

New ones
Yep - i had one of the earlier ones and they were as reliable as buggery and pretty good on fuel. The newer 4 litre ones are a Navarra with a box welded on the back and an inbuilt wallow. I do about 180 k commute each day and fill up every two days - and Nissan no no a gas conversion. At least it's the company's car and i don't pay for fuel during the week.
