Murray River Marroning/fishing - but which part?!

 Hi Everyone,

I am tossing up whether to go to the murray river or the harvey dam to try and catch some marron and fish, which one would be a surer bet to have a succesful trip and definently come home with something? My problem with the murray is where abouts on the murray do I go?!! It is so large, with so many little off shoots here and there, that I do not have a clue where to start. I am taking my nieces and nephew out, as they need to get away from the computer and get a taste of the really fun things, and real life. I have taken them beach fishing a couple of times, but haven't caught anything decent enough to bother bringing home to cook, so I want to have a successful trip!

Also, as I have not done much freshwater fishing, mostly beach and rock fishing, is it best to go with lures or bait in the rivers/dams? Or is it much of a muchness?

Can anyone please recommend where to go on the murray, and what is the best bet; murray or harvey dam? I am thinking with the murray atleast it may not be so crowded, I can use nets etc and higher bag limit, but harvey dam is easier to locate a spot I guess, but can only bag 5 and snare only. I have a ute, but it is not 4x4, so can't go on any tracks that you would need one for.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Sounds like you already spelt it out to your self there mate, kids can pull a net but a snare! Redfin love lures too, I've used small hard body's before and they work, brown/gold is best colour.

Tried a spot on the Murray

Tried a spot on the Murray last night, saw heaps of marron....but they were all bloody under size!!! So came home with nothing. Tried a bit of fishing but no luck either. I suppose scrub that spot off of the list and try another!! Yeah it's always the way - you see truck loads of stuff when you have no gear!

thanks for the tips, always grateful for them

Murray

Murray river produces some good marron and the trees offer overhead cover when the moon is full and traditionally Marron get flighty, The Harvey dam is hard place to fish during a full moon. As for spots take a look on google earth and follow the river west of Pinjarra. Take a drive and put some pellets out on the bank and see if any marron come up during the night. This is exactly what myself and my mate did and now we have found a constantly producing spot. Finding the spots is half the fun. The kids will no doubt have fun pulling nets and mucking around the bush with spotlights.
