most exciting thing about today was the water temp>

went out today hoping for some more YTKs, but only ended up with 12 nice skippy, a shark and a few red and white wrasse for muldy, young fisheries bird said to watch out for fox fish which look very similar to the wrasse, imagine getting fined $400 for what you thought was a wrasse!!!!!!!! too calm I think bit the water temp was 23.2, up 1.7 from last week, there is a strong current from the north as there was last week, fisheries also said they will be looking for out of date flares in January

Flares

Mon, 2012-12-10 14:56

Interesting that Fisheries would say January, the latest Boating Communities newsletter from the DoT said:

Deadline set for flares

Skippers of recreational vessels operating in unprotected waters throughout WA must carry at least one set of in-date flares from 1 July 2013.

Skippers are encouraged to check the expiry date on flares and other safety equipment before heading out on the water.

Expiry dates are applied to safety equipment to make sure they work when needed, especially during life-threatening circumstances.

Fox fish classed as demersal?

re the flares -if you have ever been in a situation where you needed to use a set....... any pain associated with forking out 100 bucks every three years is quickly forgotten :-)

Foxfish and Pigfish (Bodianus

Mon, 2012-12-10 15:49

Foxfish and Pigfish (Bodianus spp.) max limit 2 (no size), on the high risk demersals page (pg 5) of the fisheries booklet for the westcoast bioregion.

Keep in mind, chinamen rockcod (i.e. charlie courts) are on there too (Serranidae family). Some people have gotten these metro (or perhaps something related, but perhaps still in the same family), so be careful the wrasse you keep too. Same with parrotfish.

fined for a fox

Mon, 2012-12-10 15:58

a guy at work here got pinged the $400 for a foxfish caught a couple of weeks back(out from two rocks). He thought he'd caught another wrasse.

pleaded his case but apparently fell on deaf ears - the fine appeared in the mail a week or so later. (was just the one with a few skippy too - couldn't believe fisheries wouldn't accept an honest mistake).

just goes to show - keep the fish id book handy and if in doubt err on the side of caution! and yes....they took the fish too.....

Technically foxfish are wrasse. So are baldies. They are all in the labridae family. As already mentioned, ignorance is no excuse.
