Mooring at warroora

What's the go with mooring up a tinny off the beach at warroora or any remote beach for that matter? Don't think I would sleep easy with just my regular sand anchor holding my tinny over night so interested in others set up.

cheers

Depends

Wed, 2013-07-17 06:37

Dependant on size of anchor, length of chain, size of tinny...I. Moore regularly of beaches up here run two anchor off front in a v shape, boat can move in tide...other option is one off front one off back leave a bit of slack other wise wave motion will pull anchor as boat rises...if big tide movement use first option ... Have not had a problem ...up here I mean around Samson Dampier...o and if the sea or weather wind looks too unfriendly just pull boat out....a few minutes doing this will allow you to sleep a lot better....anchor behind low tide wave line as well

Hi Narvon,A cool set up I

Wed, 2013-07-17 08:06

Hi Narvon,

A cool set up I have seen up there used by the grey nomads is a series of poly pipes layed down in front of the boat for the least amount of resistance when pulling it out of the water hsve seen 70+ felllas do this every day with no struggle.

What we have done in the past is set two anchors set in a V as stated above attached to a float with a clip and a stainless pulley attached to an endless loop which is attached to a star picket on the beach....this allows us to pull the boat in from 10-20m out on the water basically to your feet then we board pull on the endless loop until we reach the mooring unclip and we are off...on return simply gaff the float attach the clip to the boat and pull yourself in unload the days catch and yourself and pull the boat back out to the mooring.

Bit complicated for a tinny but effective on bigger boats say 4-7m....be sure to set your mooring at lowest of low tide so you dont belly your boat and do your homework on tide ranges so you leave enough slackin the rope...I love this set up and it has been perfected over years of trying no more swimming out to the boat or resetting the mooring everytime you go out

Cheers

Use a very similar setup to Stimmsy. Works great. Star picket up the beach is great peace of mind. Just starting to get mine organised for Shark Bay in August

cheers

Depends where you are up at

Wed, 2013-07-17 18:12

Depends where you are up at Warroora... Lagoon is pretty nasty in big swells and weather... I`d prefer a hefty anchor with heavy chain and moor of the bow if down there. Inside the Reef like Sandy and 14 mile things aren`t so critical... Like the boys said above, duals out the front pointing out to sea and something solid on the beach to tie to...

Two anchors off the front in

Wed, 2013-07-17 18:21

Two anchors off the front in a v at the Lagoon and plenty of chain. Also use a float attached to them with a clip so you can unhook and go.

At Sandy I use one anchor out the front with plenty of chain and a float and one out the back that you can pull in each time you go out. Just make sure your motor is up and out of the way of the back anchor in case your boat swings.

best way i have found

Wed, 2013-07-17 19:19

the best way I found up north if your doing a over nighter to the islands up north was to take a nervous mate with you (we all have one) he will either sleep on the boat or be awake every 15 minutes to check on the boat that way you can get a good nights sleep on the beach

Two anchor set up

Wed, 2013-07-17 20:04

Use the two anchor set up that others have described but make sure they are bigger than you would normally used and use a shock cord on the bow of the boat to soften the jerk out each time a wave comes through

 Cheers everyone. Question,

Cheers everyone. Question, the V anchor set up with 2 anchors, do you drop the 2 anchors parelell to the beach or one out further than the other? No need to pull it to shore, happy to paddle out to boat on surfboard. I stay at the lagoon so few waves, ig swell come right up i might just pull the boat out but it would be easier to leave im to head to the reef for a surf when the swell is up. The shock chord sounds a good idea carnarvonite, you talking about those rubber cords bit like ocky straps?

Cords

Fri, 2013-07-19 08:02

The cords can be anything that has a lot of stretch, occy strap, bike tubes, large sewer/ water pipe rings, whatever can take the shock out of when your boat runs out of slack on the anchor line.
Just put a loop in the anchor line and the shock cord, when at full stretch, matches the length of rope in the loop then tie it off

Anchor

Fri, 2013-07-19 08:36

Hey Canarvonite if you were anchoring at somewhere inside a reef like Port Gregory I see alot of people throw their bow anchor out and point it out to sea and then back the boat in and throw a smaller anchor off the stern and bury in close on the beach.

Is this acceptable in normal conditions ?

No problems

No problems doing that as long as the bow anchor is more than capable of holding you boat like Big John says in his posting down the page a bit.

Confident

Fri, 2013-07-19 11:20

Rig, you would need to be %100 confident in the wind strength and direction I reckon.

I was out on Long island with uncle one night and we nearly got blown out of our swags buy an unpredicted wind, thankfully I only used one anchor so the boat swung down wind, I would have hated to have that wind side on which is what we would of had with a rear anchor on the beach.

V

Fri, 2013-07-19 11:59

Yeah I suppose I could always set them up as a V

I will be mooring in Lucky Bay(halfway) in a few weeks so I can attach to one of the moorings there.  I might even chuck out my plough as extra security with a heap of slack rope so it can swing on the mooring.  Its not like the moorings there are maintained so if it breaks the boat could end up on the reef.

 Poor spelling, bloody iphone

Poor spelling, bloody iphone typing... IF swell comes up a lot I could pull it out the water but pulling the boat out and putting it in on days the swell is up (in order to get a goodnight sleep) is a big pain in the arse because I'd still want the boat those days to surf the reefs.

I've never bothered with two anchors, just use a big plough (suitable for a 9-11 metre boat), 25 metre of 4500kg breaking strain rope and several metres of 12mm chain.

Survived a couple of big (unexpected) blows on Long Island no worries.

This setup is good for 2-5 metres of water although you do have to swim in and out to the boat.

Mooring at The Lagoon means

Fri, 2013-07-19 21:33

Mooring at The Lagoon means swimming to your boat each time.

From what you are saying Narvon it sounds like you will have a smaller boat if you are looking at fishing and surfing so my suggestion is to put a mooring down as far as possible to the south side where it can be calmer. Seen heapes of surfers do this.

 Yeah just a 12ft tinny,

Fri, 2013-07-19 23:09

Yeah just a 12ft tinny, might just get a big arse anchor with biggest chain i can find and put a float on the end...might throw down my small sand anchor with it and pull it up each time i use the boat. Should I throw down the smaller anchor to the west north east or south of my main big anchor?

I use a Jeyco Stingray off

Sat, 2013-07-20 19:14

I use a Jeyco Stingray off the bow - if the bottom is sandy, you wont move it once set properly (google them - they are collapsible, light weight, and have huge holding power) I just cant find where to buy one... I then have my reef anchor a long way up the beach as backup...
