Marine Protected Areas Research Seminar

Information Bulletin: Marine Protected Areas Research Seminar

The following seminar/workshop was the idea of Frank Prokop, Recfishwest and is being run by Richard Stevens, R&D Manager, WA Fishing Industry Council.

We are looking forward to a healthy representation by Recfishwest members and recreational fishers with ideas and priorities they have regarding research in the Marine Park context.

Marine Protected Areas Research Seminar

Wednesday 24th August at 1:00 pm

A workshop to discuss stakeholder research needs with regard to Marine Protected Areas will be held at Fisheries Research Laboratory 39, Northside Drive, Hillarys, commencing at 13.00 on Wednesday 24th August.

There has been much research in the field of MPA’s but little of it actually driven by those most affected by the results of such research, and much of the research, frankly, has been to ‘prove’ the value to MPA’s rather than assess if they have any value for fisheries that are already managed for sustainability.

The workshop is designed to allow fishermen (both professional and recreational) the opportunity to say what research they would like to see carried out on MPA’s.

It is an important area and one that has been driven from outside the fishing community. This will be the chance for fishing stakeholders to say what they want – so you should attend.

Please register before noon on Friday 19th August with either
Sue Smith (sue@wafic.org.au)
Richard Stevens (r&d@wafic.org.au)

MPA Seminar's

Fri, 2005-08-19 12:14

Hi Terry,
In regards to MPA's, what is the basis of the current decisions to turn an area into a protected zone? What sort of scientific methods or process do they use to determine whether an area is suitable or not?

I will unfortunately not be able to attend the meeting due to work commitments, but would like to know what the current process is compared to what the recreational/professional community might be able to put foward.

Cheers,
Adam

Marine Parks Decisions.

Adam

Simple question, not a simple answer. This could be the subject of a PHD thesis and would really test.

As you know, I post on the Western Angler Forum. Check
http://www.westernangler.com.au/forum/CALM_and_MPRA_and_Marine_Parks/m_37589/tm.htm for some basic CALM and MPRA info.

and see the CALM Marine Parks Website http://www.calm.wa.gov.au/national_parks/marine/index.html for lots of info about the process of planning Marine Parks and deciding Zoning.

Thanks Terry,

I will check out the links as I'm interested to see how the process takes place and who makes the end decision and on what basis.

Marine Protected Area Seminar

The write up of outcomes of the Marine Protected Areas seminar is now available.

It's nine A4 pages with lots of information, but includes tables so it's not possible to post it as text on a forum and keep the table layout.
