A work colleague just told me about this.

Seems Australia has roped itself into this one, shame, 'cause I had hoped to tangle with one one day....

Makos
Don't know where they got that from but to my knowledge there is no shortage of makos. They are not a shark that anyone actually goes out of their way to specifically target,if one did the best place would definitely be around Wright's bank or south west reef off cape Naturaliste.Mate at fisheries shark research said that data collected from pros over many years showed that most are caught in a 5nm radius of the cape.

And for why?
To protect stocks in the Mediterranean. Yep that'll work, especially given the Oz mako population doesn't mix with the Mediterranean stock.

I think
that we in the west coast are being grouped under an australian protection thing as they are a very popular sports (and eating) fish on the east coast.

Targetting makos
Having a look at some of the eastern sportfishing clubs etc, they're a significant part of their fishery in fishing comps etc, and everyone has probably heard some of the aerial antics they can put on.
It just makes me really annoyed, especially just now, when dealing with severe V21 withdrawal symtoms, to read this...and it would have to be applied Australia-wide.

Hello Everybody, we have
Hello Everybody,
we have been astounded to learn that from 31st January 2010, 3 Sharks (Longfin Mako, Shortfin Mako & Probeagle) will be added to the same list as the Great White. Can all fisho's please get behind this as this could be the first of many nails in the "recrational fishing Coffin" who knows, maybe your favorite species will be next on the list........maybe sampsons?, GTs?, Barra?, Red Empror???
I wanted to draw your attention to this important petition that I recently signed:
"Ban the ban on new Federal Government Fishing Legislation"
http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/governmentfishingbans/
I really think this is an important cause, and I'd like to encourage you to add your signature, too. It's free and takes just a few seconds of your time.
Thanks!
