Making popper's

need some help. started making some popper's at school this morning and want to finish them in tomorrows lession and paint them on friday just wondering if anybody has any suggestions as how to attach trebbels. I was thinking of either drilling a hole through each sepparatly that ran from the mouth to the tail but not sure how i would attach one under the belly? or cutting the lure in half and chisle out a path for the wire tracer putting it in then glu the lure back together? just wondering how people make there lure's? all comment's appreciated
Thank's in advance

You dont necessarily need a middle treble, but you can do what they do on some gt poppers and drill a hole the length of the popper, then drill from the bottom to that hole (so kinda like a T shape). Then slide a swivel in there and push the rod through the lengthways hole. Theres lots of similar and more complicated ways to do it though. Depends how strong you want it i guess

I find that cutting them in half as you suggested is quick and

easy and, if you use a strong enough glue and make sure it sets, it will give you just as strong a set as drilling and inserting - if not stronger.

What are you going to paint it with. I will give you a tip - nail varnish is brilliant. Dries fast, dries hard and gives you a smooth surface. You will need a couple of coats though.

My Popper - a strong lure!

Mon, 2009-06-29 19:48

I've only ever made one popper and I'm happy with result - It bloops nicely.

Glue two pieces of timber together with a sheet of paper between (this helps with splitting it later).  Standard PVA wood glue used.

Plane or bench sand the square edges and then load up in lathe.

Shape to desired shape leaving extended piece near head of lure.

Remove from lathe and position tail into jaws of lathe.

I then used a big drill bit in the other end of lathe (forgot what that part is called) to drill a cup in the face.  (Bench vice and hand drill would do the same)

Remove from lathe and cut angle to form face of lure. (See pic - you'll get the idea).

Split the lure and hand groove a slot from head to tail and up to centre for mid body treble connection.  I didnt' drill (before splitting) as a bit long enough for the lure would leave a hole too big.

Use a single length of staino wire to form the 3 off loops protruding from lure.  I did a few twists along the wire.

Araldite up the lot, sand and paint.

The result;

Yes, I haven't got split rings on (yet)- forgot them, so I just put the trebs on at the time.

Hope that helps.

Just need a big bad arse GT dumb enough to eat it now!

Cheers Pete

If you are going to Exxy Ollie I reckon

Mon, 2009-06-29 19:56

you should make a few. You will need them. The red and white like Pete has done is popular and I will would make a few in diffent colours and shades. You can get the nail varnish in the bargain bins at most chemists for a dollar or two a bottle. A couple of bottles would coat heaps of poppers.

I also get the hard top coat nail varnish to finish them off.

Colour

Mon, 2009-06-29 19:53

Red head - like mine.

or a gold, if one colour.

The action is more important then the colour anyway!

At least you are going to a good place to test it out Ollie.

Make sure to get a few pics of it before it gets smashed!

Cheers Pete

It is the joy of catching a fish on something you have made.
It is a bit like making your own fishing rod, or buiding your own boat.

Nice work Ollie.

So - bandsaw in half...or can I see the two halves there (dark line along the lower length).

RE - the head, cut along line as you said.  I'd then drill both to make a cup, but only angle cut one of them.  You then have two lures that will have a different action - good way of learning for the next batch.

Cheers Pete

it wont if you seal them

Mon, 2009-06-29 22:37

it wont if you seal them properly , thats why a couple of coats and a clear finnish, seals and toughens at the same time
