Hey Moondyne I use a fair few Mackbaits and dare I say it BCF are one of the few local places with better value and usually have a few colours and sizes in stock. I used to source mine from Wellsys tackle and get them posted over ($13/$14 each) but now it seems they arent going to carry them anymore. Now a good option is on the Lively Lures website itself. Haven't done it myself yet but the prices there are $16 for 5" and unless they are on sale somewhere else or BCF are feeling generous, it may be the best price you'll find. As for the colours I have never had success with the redhead in any lure - a bit of a myth for mine until proven otherwise. Blue and black macks and both the blue and green bonitos would be my recommendations. (The blue pilchard is a Halco Max and that range does well too). I use them spinning up north and if thats what your doing with them you will have success on Spaniards as well as Tuna, Cobia, Tailor and Trevally to name a few. I have caught those on them anyway. Oh and sharks like them too. Can't comment on their trolling ability but if you're casting with them, the 4 and 7 inch are a waste of time imo - just go with the 5 inch. Hope that all helps.
Howa Hunter. I find the Red head lures work well on the Macks at minimal light. Trolled from just before sun up till probably half hour after. After then its blue mack colours all the way.
Hey dodgy would you say fish response would be the same for trolling and spinning? I have never trolled as I'm all land based but we have tried redheads at all times of day, tides, water clarity etc and have just never had them fire. I must say though my experience is very location specific so I'm sure my experience would be different elsewhere fishing for other things in different environments. It is by no means a dud colour - it just hasn't worked for me where I use them.
seen me mate have heaps of succsess spinning for bonito from north mole with a red head lively 5 inch at sunrise while my blue bonnie didnt have as much sucsess till we went trolling then it really come in its own with a few tuna and 2 good chases from a big mak when casting at a bait school while the red head untouched great lure i recon dont go any wear without 1
Hey Callum, that makes sense with success at sunrise and backs up what dodgy is saying. Maybe thats the time I'll focus on to see if I can get them working!! Thanks again for your help on the weekend - we ended up putting things on hold for a week but looking forward to see how they go. Cheers
howa hunter, what other lures do you recomend for spinning up north? i know the weight of the mackbaits is a big plus for cast distance so looking for lures that do a similar job. have got a few nilsmasters and x-raps but they are pretty $$$. i know some days macks can be real picky so looking to get a wide range of lure type and colour.
I gotta say there are heaps of blokes on here with heaps more experience up there than me but for the few years that I have been going up to Shark Bay I now only take bibless lures. Mack baits and Halco Max lures are the ones I see best results with. The casting distance is one of the main factors I prefer them and because they don't cost $30 each so stocking up and losing some isn't that painful. I have spoken to Tim at Halco about the Max's and ways to entice the shy Macks and he gave me some good technique advice so I would advise a call to him. As for the colours here is a good thread from a week or 2 ago that will shed some light on things http://fishwrecked.com/forum/favourite-mackie-lures For the Max's my best success is with the king brown, pilchard and fusiler. I haven't tried it yet but I reckon stripey would be a goer as well.
as far as up there goes dont go without a few halco gold twisties 50 - 60 grams is fine if your using braid they cast a mile and work bloody good for all species
the pink mack baits with the black stripe on top worked really well i had most hits on my pink ones compared to any other lure allthough i never managed to land a fish on one i kept dropping them haha, a bloke i know who has fished steep point for 30 years says the mack baits with latteral stripes, another bloke who goes up there quite often swears by the bannana mack baits

i heard that the bloke
i heard that the bloke making the macks has stopped selling them to tackle shops and is now marketing them himself
anyway you can buy them off his website for a bit cheaper than you would get them in the tackle shop
