Looking for suggestions for an overhead surf rod
Submitted by Colin Hay on Tue, 2009-11-17 16:05
I am hoping to pick up a Shimano Trinidad 20DC overhead reel soon, but I am wondering what rod I should put it on.
I would prefer something at least 12 foot long and able to handle throwing lures through to medium-sized live baits.
Any suggestions?
Thanks a lot, Colin

I know you like your moonraker

The Tiralejo come highly regarded, but will be pushing $600 for the 12'

hes getting a good buy on his trinidad dc so the extra cash he saves would go nicely on a Tiralejo

Thanks lads Some very good suggestions, though I am not
sure about your JW pick there James (LMAO).
I really fancy the sensor surfs and the tirajellos. Both look like excellent rods. I think I need to have a first hand look at those two.
Thanks a lot for your help guys - except you James (Lol).

pity you cant just go and
pity you cant just go and grab a rod and try it out before you buy it ,one thing with the overhead , be prepared for some serious birdnesting until you get used to it

I fished pretty exclusively from the rocks and beaches
with overheads for about 20 years, so I know a lot about birdnests (Lol).
I do prefer overheads for that sort of thing, but I am finding it harder to see in falling light (when I most like to fish) and I was finding it harder to prepare myself for deceleration. I did start thumbing earlier to cut back on the bird nests, but then I was losing a fair bit of distance.
A couple of kind chaps on here have let me use a DC, and, while it is not infalible, it does help overcome most of those issues.
Thanks guys, see you soon for some Chille Mussel Pizza (Lol), Colin

Nitro specialised distance,
Nitro specialised distance, 13' nice and light and casts a mile. One of my favourite rods. As the Faulkners said be prepared for the birdsnests although with a trinidad dc it shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks Brenz. I am bit disappointed that the Sensor Surfs
only go up to 11'4" in the OH model. Though they look like a very nice rod.

I wouldn't be too concerned
I wouldn't be too concerned on the length of the oh sensor stuff.Mine sensor surf with a daiwa saltist 30 on it would cast as far as my moonraker with emblem pro.Although that could just be the casting distance difference of an overhead compared to spinning reel coming through.

It is not the casting length Nelly
A 9 or 10 foot rod can cast far enough. It is the extra capacity to maneuver fish around tight obstacles on rock walls or to overcome big winter shore breaks where the extra height has an advtange. I already have a 20 foot LiveFibre OH if I need a short rod.

sounds like someone is compensating
with all these super long rods.
Please tell me 20' is a typo!! It'd be like casting with a small tree.......

Lol Huggy It certainly helps to have a few extra feet on the
length of the rod when you are a short arse like me.

I do agree that extra length
I do agree that extra length can be good at times especially when there is a big shore break.I also use rod holders that are around 1.4 metres to help keep the line out of the water on the other hand the bigger the rod the harder to handle big fish.
