Looking for a 6kg baitfeeder reel. whats should i be going for?

Im looking for a reel to match a Composite Development (NZ custom rods) 6-8kg trigger grip 7 foot rod i have had for a little while. For LBG use.

Something small and light. Great smooth casting, enough beef in the drag to stop stuff on 6kg.

Was looking at the sl20. What are the other options that would be worth a look... Saltist 20h?

Any help, much appreciated. Cheers.

ive got a 6500b which i use

Wed, 2009-09-30 22:13

ive got a 6500b which i use on the surfcaster, or 15kg 9footer. They are pretty damn good for sure. But im looking for a baitfeeder, a little overhead to fling out and thumb around as it sinks down.

I also have a small daiwa baitrunner, not too happy with it at all. Would rather just skill my thumb up on a small overhead and go from there.

Cheers,

George.

being a trigger grip i think

being a trigger grip i think your after a baitcaster (drum) reel ?? bait feeders are a fair bit differant .. if it a baitcaster your after then the saltist 20 or calcutta's are good.

dang lingo :)... haha.. are baitfeeders the same as baitrunners?

I thought a baitfeeder and baitcaster were the same... oh well

Looking for a small overhead, similar to the daiwa SL20. or Saltist 20h.

I think the charter special

Thu, 2009-10-01 09:50

I think the charter special might be a little mismatched to a 6-8kg trigger grip rod, and hard to cast any light lures.

Knowing a budget and required capacity would help a fair bit. Are you going to run braid or mono?

As for the drag with enough "beef in the drag to stop stuff on 6kg". At that line class, most round baitcasters have enough drag to snap that out of the box, so what you'd really want is to make sure the drag is smooth, rather than beefy. You'd only be using a max of 2kg of drag. Even the smallest, ultra-tiny low profile baitcasters will have enough drag. A saltist 20 is capable of pumping out something like 9kg of drag. If you're only using 6kg line, and want to match it with a light baitcasting rod, I dont think its the best option. Better suited to running 30lb+ and matched to a heavier offshore rod, or a suitable beach rod. At 490g ts not something you'll want to cast all day with, especially when you can get something half the weight that will still have ample line and drag capacity. E.g a calcutta 200 will have no problems fitting 300m of mono. If you go braid, then pretty much any reel will have enough capacity, so a fair few options out there.

What kind of situations are you looking at using it in? Baitcasters are great for accuracy, or feathering baits out in a drift (doesnt make much difference if you're casting unless you're in deep water), but a lot of cases, length of cast is more useful, in which case a spinning setup might work better. Even if you have the rod, theres not much point in getting a reel just to match it up if its not going to suit your fishing aims.

If you're abit tight on

Thu, 2009-10-01 11:44

If you're abit tight on budget, look at the Abu Ambassaduers 6500C3 or 6600C4. For not much more you can also look at the Banax Starion 200 as they are similar to the Calcutta without the price tag.

Dont forget, any purchases made will receive the Fishwrecked Members discount as well.

$300 should get me something

Thu, 2009-10-01 19:37

$300 should get me something pretty decent. Its going to be bashed around a bit from general use on the rocks.

I intend to run mono on it, and would expect to get 300m of 6kg. Although i will mostly use it for running the lighter mono and wouldnt usually use more than 2-3kg drag i dont want to be burning it out near on max all the time.  The Calcutta is looking good.

What is available in a lever drag?

For a Calcutta 400B you're

Thu, 2009-10-01 20:18

For a Calcutta 400B you're looking closer to $400 for one. A reel with lever drag doesnt necessarily means there's more drag, just smoother and more consistent drag over time due to its setup. Running just one large drag washer with preset drag settings. LD reels are usually more for something compact and quality, eg. Penn Inter 975LD >$600!!

Oh and castable lever drags

Thu, 2009-10-01 20:24

Oh and castable lever drags are uncommon, good ones are rarer than rocking horse shit. Forget LD if you want a really good caster, especially on a budget.
