Long distance casting

Following up on Andy Mac's suggestion I am opening up a thread on long casting.

I don't know about some of you other landbased fishers, but I am always looking for new information on what is the best casting reel or rod - or both.

To that I guess you would need to consider what you are casting, ie, lures or large baits.

After seeing Vans' Moonraker in action last week, I have got to think that is one of the best factory made long casting beach rods around - certainly for lures and smaller baits.

A lot of east coast beach fishermen rate the Poseidons for casting larger baits. But then again they have interchangeable to allow myou to cast different size baits.

I know there are a few guys who prefer custom made rods.
Does anyone have a particular favourite blank for a long casting.

Then of course there is the reel choice - overhead, spinning reel or sidecast.
Personally, I like all three and canh probably cast each around the same distance - depending on whether I am casting a lure or a large bait out.

Any thoughts.

Quoting Marc

Hope you don't mind me cutting and pasting your post from the other thread Marc?
"10pound line..... Very whippy 10ft rod and perfect weight rig."
Now that is interesting. It shows that size may not be everything when it comes to casting.
What sort of reel would you favour with that sort of set-up Marc?
I would guess you would use a larger rod from the beach.

Damn you beat me to it Colin!! haha

I'm very keen to see just how far i can get it to go.

The moonraker is made for 150gr (5.3oz) so i don't think i have maxed it out yet!!

That twisty i had on the other day was a 70gr (2.5oz). I have a 3 and 4oz richters in the box that i should have tried.

Im using a penn USA 850ss . I can only get that kind of distance if spool is loaded up full with line so there is little resistance.

I dont like using line this light but sometimes its needed to get out that far.

The rod i got was custom built 10 foot off Jim head. Killwell blank and very wippy but lots of grunt!

I tryed to cast like this last weekend with float mulie set up and snapped the line strait away Grrrrrrrr

now i know im going to get laughed at but the best casting reel i have is a modified Sea Martin mark 2 .. by modify - the spool has been put on a wood layth (sp) and tapered in to the top of the spool and i removed some of the lip of the spool as well . if the reel is placed upside down the line just spirals off with no friction on the line under it or the spool itself ... i run 8kg braid on it with a 30lb mono casting leader . used with my 12 foot ozflex i can easylly get 100m every cast . they used to be modified like this many years ago for pro casters in comps . i just use mine for casting big twisties to very deep salmon schools :)

Some good info

Wed, 2008-03-26 22:05

Thanks for the input. Sounds like some serious work done on the Sea Martin Feral. Did you do itself or get a specialist in.
Marc, Do they make those Kilwell blanks in longer lengths. Never heard of them. Are they US made?

How big are the Nitro Messiah rods Sam?

I am thinking of getting an Emblem pro, they get mentioned a lot when there are discussions about long casting reels.

Has anyone tried the Poseidon rods? They also come up a bit in threads about casting?

Hi Ya,

I've said before, if you want to learn about long distance casting, go visit the dry casters on a club day.  They meet at a park in Yokine (Yokine Reserve fromm memory).  No only do they welcome visitors they will teach you how to use your own gear to best advantage.  Check out their web site at

http://www.surfcasters.iinet.net.au/DrycastingMain.html

Cheers.

Thanks Ody

I have checked that site and I am not sure what is happening as the last dates they have are in early 2007.
I will have a bit more of a dig around as it would be interesting to have a look at - specially as they are just down the road from my house.
Thanks again
Colin Hay

Dry casting

Fri, 2008-04-04 10:34

Yokine Reserve Sunday 6 April. Usually first Sunday of the month except LWE, Fathers Day, etc

People get there from about 7:30 onwards to set up and practice.

Competition casting from 8:30 to about 12:30 depending on numbers,

Sausage sizzle and drinks for lunch.

Can supply help and info about casting for visitors when club members are waiting their turn and not involved in measuring/scoring etc.

Time to talk about fishing or whatever eg West coast rules???

Visitors welcome and the club would appreciate if people would contact the club or a member if they intend to come.

Ok Colin heres my opinion.

Fri, 2008-04-04 15:02

Ok Colin heres my opinion. For really long distance beach casting i prefer a shorter stiffer overhead style for reaching the desired spot. When i say shorter i mean drop down to a heavier 10 foot rather than say a 13 foot. You need to be able to cast a heavy wieght when going out far so the stiffer rod allows for this. Also a overhead when casting big mulla baits or 100gm plus lures has no restrictions and the line can run off with ease and the only stopping power (when the brakes are backed off) is your thumb making it sail further. Yeah theres the backlash problem but once mastered you will never get a spin rod for long distance again.

i know the dry casters use spin reeels but hey there gear is only set up for distance casting and will never get wet in its life and there rods proberly land a fish either.

Im currently using a 11 foot trialejo from shimano and they are sweet! Matched up 2 a torium 16 and running 30lg braid. Casts over 100m are easily done with a quick filck and because of the slide and grip reel mount you can put the reel up higher to get that extra leverage when casting and then slide it down again when fighting a fish. Giving it heaps which i have done into the wind even can get awsome casting ability and whole tailor baits go flying!

Dry casting it in a park......with a guess i recon i could smash 150m plus no worries but that cant be said until i give it a go.mmmmm i might try that and get back 2 you. Cheers Chris.

Keep it tight, reeeeeeel tight!

Thanks for the info mate. I thought I would go along and have a look. They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks (and my wife tells me I am old dog) but I thought I might learn something new. Plus I have never seen the dry casting in person.
I agree on the overhead and the stiffer rod. I have a saltist 40 teamed up with an 11 foot live fibre. Casts like a dream.
What I want to work on is my casting with light weights - ie unweighted mulies.
All the best, Colin
