Light OH jigging reel opinions
Hi everyone,
Im looking to purchase a new light demersal jigging combo for jigs 80-120g being used in 30-50m... The reels I am considering at the moment are the Shimano Ocea Jigger 1500PG or the JM Powerspell PE3. Possibly the Trinidad 16A could get a look in, but it is a lot heavier than the OJ with similar specs.
I understand that quite a few guys on here own the OJ and seem to rate them, but I am a little concerned on the longevity of the 8kg drag rating once a few decent dhus or sambos have been hooked, and the fact there seems to be no upgrade available for the 1500. The star drag will be a new experience on a jigging reel for me also, but of less importance. On the other hand though there seems to be little feedback or user reviews at all for the JM and Trinidad.
If my concerns for the drag were put to rest I'd probably prefer the OJ, so any feedback on that point would be helpful. Any experiences at all with using the others would be appreciated, as the JM seems a solid unit.
Cheers.

OJ, Seaquest slays the shit
OJ, Seaquest slays the shit out of his nrpg & has knocked over some big bycatch seriolas. Alas can't comment on the JM, maybe others can
edit: forgot to add no drag issues of note, personally think they pump out more drag than quoted. Only criticism is that it does sound a tad sticky on the odd occasion

JM Powerspell
Hi mate,
All the reels you have listed are great little units, As for the JM powerspell PE3 our personal experience with the reel is great. Straight out of the box it comes ready with 25lb of effective drag pressure and can be loaded upto more. Plenty of spool capacity with PE3 fitting 400m. We have used these reels for anything from chasing demersals in 50m of water to even jigging the Derwent for large Samson fish and Amberjacks.
A very strong and light reel.
Feel free to PM us if you have any other questions regarding the powerspell.

I put carbontex washers in mine and for PE3 demersal fishing I feel that the drag is fine. And for those times you hook a sambo and it isnt fine, that's what your thumb is for!
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Cheers for the comments!
That's a good point about thumb power dkonig82! Did you get a custom washer made for the 1500 or modify one designed for another reel?
A mate I fish with has the Accurate BX500N and it is a stout reel so the 400XN could be in the mix definitely. Ive left that one out.
Ive been thinking about the twin drag system and how this would possibly distribute energy more evenly under pressure..? Which would be a pro for the JM and Accurate. Ive read somewhere before that under the shell they are quite similar reels.
I think I just need to bite the bullet and choose one as they would all have advantages over one another in particular areas.
Thanks again for the feedback.

I'm pretty sure Oceanside can sort that out for you. They definitely fitted mine - fairly sure I sourced it through them also.

I went the OJ 2000 NRPG
I went the OJ 2000 NRPG with PE3 braid on a JM Ocean devil PE 1.5-4 and its a cracking setup mate, been hooked onto some serious Sambos on that sucker and it stands up to them so sweet! Dont be affraid of the 2000 its still quiet a small outfit and 12.5kg of drag with the option of off the shelf upgradable washers is a winner.
I'll add a link of the combo getting a workout on a solid sambo you be the judge :)

You will love the OJ reel im stoked i went with it.

The Saltiga Z30 is a brillaint reel and that was what I was about to buy when I was going to get my wife a reeel for this type of thing. Ended up getting her a Ryoga Bay jigger instead as it had a level wind. It's a more beefed up system than the Saltiga in fact. It's also smaller.
You won't go wrong with anything that has been suggested though. A Talica 8 or Penn Torque 12 would also be sweet.
