kayaks deep offshore

Just wondering if anyone knows of, practices or has previously towed or stowed kayaks on their boats and has used them as a "mothership" to then deploy out deep?

What are some general tips and advice on the ways in which to go about doing this?

I've seen people do this on you tube it looks awesome I have a tandem but not a boat so if anyone is keen to give it a go let me know also.

So, someone takes you out on thier boat then brings you back in again, bear in mind you could be say 20k offshore. Its a hell of a long paddle back.

What would make it easy..

would be if you had on offer a bertram or caribbean style cabin cruiser(35- 40 footer)  where you could place the kayaks on the bow where theres loads of space and high railing.

I coluldnt imagine that would be to easy though as they would have to sit on stand-by as you paddled around.

Or sell the canoe and buy a boat!! ;)

Seen pics of guys taking Yaks

Thu, 2012-06-07 10:00

Seen pics of guys taking Yaks out on bigger boats to the FAD's out the back of rotto then using the yaks to fish for Dollies. I also remember hearing/reading of a Yak organised Charter to the Abrolhos on a big boat where they took their Yaks across on the Charter Boat and based themselves off it as a mothership for the Yaks.

Why, guess its more of a challenge catching any fish off a Yak than a boat where you can easily stand to fight it or just gun the motor to chase a fish.

 As a person whose budget

Thu, 2012-06-07 22:27

As a person whose budget wont stand with the espense of owning a boat, i use a Yak to fish the deep blue. My $1100 yak gets me to snapper/dhuie territories with ease and comfort along the WA coast, pending ideal offshore conditions of course.

I'm on for the Abrolhos Trip on July 13, hopefully we'll get stuck into some nice fishing!

Can I ask, do you really peddle all the way from shore to the abrolhos?

That is about 60+ km away, how long do you take to reach there?

one of the commenters called it a challenge.. yeah catching a fish on a kayak is different and exciting. Using the mothership is easy you literally just chuck your yak on the boat on the deck and off you go. Using a rope you can deploy deap see and get a free tow from a fish. I reckon someone will have stay aboard the boat pretty good excuse to fish while the yakkers catch theirs

a point for the yakka

Fri, 2012-06-08 22:24

you will need to have an RFBL if you are using a powered boat to get to your destination, no matter whether you are catching them from a yak.

Personally while I enjoy taking other people out fishing/exploring etc on my boat, Id be much less keen to tow a yak out deep, as I'd be responsible for his welfare but have no control.

Having said that though, the Abrolhos would be absolutely ideal territory for yak fishing/exploring in every way (except wind!).

You will have an absolute blast out there so long as your in the right area for the conditions.
