Karratha Muddies

Been seeing alot of blue manna shots from the southern regions of late, which has been giving me a craving for crabs. Haven't been able to get out lately because of Christmas and work commitments. Hate going out on the weekends as there are boats and people everywhere and prefer to have some piece and quiet.

Yesterdays weather conditions meant it was going to be choppy out wide so decided to load the boat with the drop nets and crab hooks. Decided to leave the flick rods behind (mistake) and to concentrate solely on crabbing. Got to the banks while the holes were exposed and the first crab was an absolute horse(2 1/2 kg). Took a while to get crabs in the net, but on the turn of the tide the nets became very active.

Saw some big fish smashing the bait schools, but unfortunately never chucked a rod in the boat which could have seen some barra or threadies in the boat as well. Also at backbeach boat ramp there were prawns jumping everywhere when we launched in the morning. If Karratha residents are keen take a throw net down there you will clean up on kilos of prawns, as the water is bubbling with them.

After a good days crabbing and some quiet brews decided to head home and steam the crabs in the big pot outside. It ended up be an enjoyable day up the creeks and was nice to be home early in the afternoon.

Stock mix

Thu, 2011-01-20 11:13

1cm of water in the pot, grated ginger(thumb size), 4 cloves of grated garlic, 2 teaspoons of chilli paste and a squeezed lemon(cut in half) chucked in with the stock.

-Get the water to the boil

-Put crabs in the pot and bring back to the boil

-Put the lid on and cut back to a low heat(simmering) for half an hour.

The taste of the flesh is devine!!!!

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

good work on the muddies, i

Thu, 2011-01-20 12:21

good work on the muddies, i haven't had any luck with them prior to chrissy, Blueys are sweeter but the reward for cracking into a muddie for the bulk flesh is amazing, the big ones with the meat alone in the swimmer legs in the body would rival a whole bluey on a good day. we are spoilt that we get both thats for sure.

cast net is conming out next week for some prawns early in the morning for sure!!!

Just dont try and get prawns in the cast net to eat

Thu, 2011-01-20 14:37

You are going to use them as bait. I think using a cast net to catch crabs to eat is illegal. (Dont quote me). But if you intend to use them as bait, ie incidentally caught while chasing mullet it is allowed (again dont quote me).

You are just going to stock up on bait arent you Brucesta?? LOL.

This is a gray area of the netting law and I still am confused. I take a scoop net with me when I "accidentally" get prawns in the net. That way I caught them with the scoop net not the throw net. It would be nice to have this clarified though, because I dont like breaking the fishing laws, or bending it.
