Kalbarri navigation
Submitted by sea-kem on Tue, 2013-06-04 17:16
Hi all, still contemplating a shorter northerly trip this year. Have never launched at Kalbarri and have heard stories that it's a bit of a task to get out to sea from the river? Can anyone enlighten me on this? Hard? Easy? info appreciated.

Just spent the long weekend
Just spent the long weekend up there, there was no swell tho so it was flat as a tack heading through the mouth. But been out a few times with the swell up without any problems or close calls. As till said, it's all about timing and not chicken out half way through. Going outs the hard part, coming in is easy. Just wait for a break in the swell and go for it, stick closer to the green nav markers rather then further away tho. Best thing is to just watch it for as long as you can first. If the swell is 3m's or more tho I don't think I'd risk it.

Not sure about the Navigation, but i am keen to come haha!!
Getting through the breakers is a experience...Some days no worries, some days sit and have a few beers!!
I think you can beach launch at the lagoon at lucky bay ? Or somewhere around there...

Cheers Guys. Yeah I won't head out in anything over 2.5m anyway unless the wind is down. Don't worry Vin I'll keep you in mind, it's the missus I've got to plan around lol. The video give me an idea what's instore up there Jamie. Like Paul said I think I'd sit on the bank bank first and watch it for a while.

4 metre tinny
Went out once solo in the tinny, go out safely though the swell was cranking, thought to myself 'don't be a dumbarse'.
Put the life jacket on, watched the sets for about 15 minutes and then hammered back in. Swell kept building all morning and I was glad I was watching it back on dry land.

Before you go out sit and
Before you go out sit and watch it for a minute to see what mood it is in. See where the rocks and sand are and where the white water ends. A minute at the start could save your arse in the end.

As Till said
When you hit the second marker on the way out just head back to shore for a bit instead of heading straight out like alot of people do . Unless the weather is feral you should have no worries at all.

Hey Sea-Kem,
Here's a vid on the opposite end of the scale. IMO, from what I've seen up there the first video is in very good conditions.
This looks like local sea-rescue guiding in one of the hire boats. It also looks absolutely feral out there. It does give an idea of the safe line though.

Cheers Steve, l can see what
Cheers Steve, l can see what you mean by the line through with the Starboard markers. I met the owner of that hire boat up at Gnaraloo a couple of years back. South African fella named Laurie. He would go out in pretty shitful conditions, so wouldn't surprise me if that was actually him skippering the boat.

Going around north mole in a 30 knot nor wester is horrid too. Just monitor the conditions and use your brain.

not that bad
its not that bad guys. its a normal rivermouth. seen worse ones. the key is to use your track on your plotter if you have one. use the same line as you would if it were flat and if it were 8ft! the tricky part is coming in but it is just a reverse of going out, same line same track. just don't come in in front of a wave always wait till the set has passed and come in on the back of a wave. seen so many people nearly get bitten on the bum coming in on the front of a wave. I am willing to help anyone with the rivermouth. been through it from flat to closing out in pitch black 12ft conditions. its good fun!

Sounds like you need to get involved instead of standing back and watching Tangles.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

It can be quite a scary
It can be quite a scary proposition if going it in big swell and out going tide as I found out, but we still made it out to fish and back. When there is no swell its almost as easy as any estuary I've been out thru. My mate has lived there now for a while and he showed me thru and back so I'm pretty happy going out in most conditions.

First Video
The first video shown was my boat the Quintrex, I found it fun but just got to time the waves right as they usually come in sets of three. The local sea rescue did say that if the south wester started blowing get in asap. Probably what happened to the second video.
