Just a question

This photo is from Luke R's for sale post. My question is, that sustantial school showing on the lowrance, why does it look much less impressive on the furuno? I would have figured the furuno being on low freq / wider cone, should have the fish in the beam for longer and would show more streaks that the hds has. Is it because the page advance is halved?

The lowrance is on 200khz, the Furuno is on 50khz. You will get better resoution at the higher frequency.

So a FCV-585 wont even show a good school of sambos(im guessing) 80m down on low frequency?

I'm not trying to knock furuno, just trying to figure out whats going on in this photo.

Personally i think the furuno is showing a better picture. It is not just a big lit up mass but it is detecting singular fish and showing them up individually. As has been said turn the gain up to 10 and the furuno will be a red mass .It will be a red mass of fuck all though

OK I guess the gain is just lower than what I would use.

*It is not just a big lit up mass but it is detecting singular fish and showing them up individually* < That doesn't really make sense to me because as I understand it if a fish with a strong echo stays in the beam swimming up and down for 15 seconds there will be a line going across the screen up and down 15 seconds long, not a single blob. (unless you're running down scan imaging).

If you can keep a fish that is swimming (obviously) under your moving boats sonar image for 15 seconds your doing better than most . Less time reading and more time looking at the sounder is the only way to interpret sounder screens. They all read different from model to model and brand to brand . Position of transducers and if they are wetfaced or shoot through also affect readings. Swell ,sea state ,wind, current.... need i go on, it truely is an art to be mastered.

george is right there-after many years of commercial/charter fishing there is still much to learn about sounders for me.

One thing many dont understand is that looking at a single image of a sounder picture is EXACTLY the same as looking at a single frame of a movie and trying to tell the the whole story plot.

There are so many variables between 2 sounders side by side that a meaningful comparison is impossible unless maybe operated by a person who has PRACTICAL experience with both brands.

Personally to me, the Furuno picture looks more interesting but then I have used Furuno almost exclusively, plus use bottom lock alot especially up north.
