Just got my first boat

About 2 weeks ago i got my first boat as a 21st birthday present. It is a 4m dinghy with a 10HP motor. So far i havent been able to take it out as the weather has been pretty rough lately, and this weekend doesn't look much better either unfortunately. I'm a keen fisherman as are my 2mates that always come with me, my brother and Jas04. We are looking for a good spot to take the boat out soon as im dying to get it out. We were origionally goin to go out to cockburn sound for some kg whiting and herring etc. but because of the weather we've had to re-asses our ideas. Does anyone know of a good spot to take a dinghy when its quite windy? Im happy fishing in the river but as i've never really spent any time on boats i wouldn't really know where to go except places like narrows and around mosman park.

I'd get some time up in the river and get some experience before heading open water.  Learn the capabilities of your boat and familiarise yourself with it and it will serve you a lot better.  The fun part is exploring and finding new spots which hold fish, Mossie Park/Claremont areas should hold some blackies this time of year but I'm unsure how much rain you've had and where they would be.  Time to go looking! :)

Cheers,

Adam

Or you can always fish the sheltered part of the sound down near palm beach and chase whiting and squid?

FYI you need a lisence to drive that if you didnt know as its over 6hp (notice you said you havent had much boating experience)

As for spots to fish, little island at hillarys would be reachable in that tinny, or stick close the land out the front of trigg and you could get into some nice whiting, herring, skippy and maybe a snapper/sambo if your lucky.

Absolutely spot on advice mate! Though it's only a small boat, just taking it out first time on the river to get used to it is very wise and a perfect opporunity to flick out for a few nice brimkis.

Hope you have your RST to Ash here's the link if you need it:

We all are impatient when we get our boat. But best to take it one step at a time - get used to your boat, check you have all the gear and know your boat's limitations. Wink

there are some huge bream under there.
As Adam and Colin said, get plenty of practice in the river. Even things like anchoring up in currents. You don't want to get caught out in the ocean.

Ash06, it may also be helpful to go on the ocean with someone from here in there boat first. It will help you get a feel for the ocean and what to expect when you do take your own boat out. Plenty of us always heading out.
