Take a good look at a chart

North Passage is very safe except in really big swells, so I would suggest using it for your first time out.  Just head out from the marina and stay north of the islands, but beware of reef close inshore and the line of reef behind the island chain.

South Passage requires you to carefully follow the markers out as there is nasty reef close by.  If you use Sth Passage, beware that there is a shallow area "called the Boomer from memory"  SW of South Passage.  It is a fair way out, but breaks and has caught many people out.

I suggest taking a good look at a chart of the area before heading out.  There are some good fish caught in close, but most head out to the second bank where depths drop off quickly from 60 odd meters to the hundreds.  Again from memory, that is about 20nm out.

I haven't fished Jurien for about 5yrs and don't have chart in front of me, hence the "abouts", but I am actually heading up there tonight for 2 days, so there will be less "abouts" in my next post about Jurien!

Not that good

The winds don't look that good

South Passage does indeed take some getting used to and has a number of traps for the inexperienced - Boomer really doesn't pose a problem for sp users as they generally head down the outside of the reef to around Escape before taking off in their desired direction ...........from escape deep water 100+ metres is around 19 miles and boy does it get deep quickly.

Sounding along the drop off will reveal large schools of snapper which are easily targetted (if you don't mind a very long wind up) and there is a heap of reef structure in the 50-60 metre range and some worth targetting in the high 30's as well

LOVE the place, get your yellowtail whole from the marina at night - good luck but boat safe !!!!!

sat is your best day.... follow north safe passage for the first time. if the swell gets up all the short cuts get shut down. i had more luck just behind the islands than 20km out.  You can easily sound for big fish in shallow. last long weekend i picked up 4 dhuies just behind the island in a matter of four drifts.. good luck.....sun looks very bad....

2.5 mtr swell isnt too bad

2.5 mtr swell isnt too bad as long as you follow the chanel out and watch the gps carefully, anything over 3mtrs out from south dont risk it. i have done it on 3.5 mtr swell following a sea rescue member out and unless you know the waters definately dont go that way , however the north passage is verry safe as long as you follow the safe passage line out that shows on the gps (hopefully)  it is good fishing up there just spend the time looking for ground with fish as there is plenty of empty lumps, good luck with the trip
