Jigging the Rig

Yesterday, Honshu and I had the opportunity to head out with Simon C to take advantage of our winning bids in the Fishwrecked auction for the trip to the Key Biscayne. While the wind didn't match up to the forecasts, it was still a great day with plenty of sambo action, topped off with a nice final session on a large school of pinkys. I managed to load up my new Xzoga rod on a few nice sambo and it handled really well. I managed to jig up five sambos at the Key Biscayne, two reasonable sized and a few smallies. Lost one bigger fish when my split ring gave out. Simon and his buddy Justin let Honshu have most of the action and Honshu pulled in a real nice Sambo. Simon and Justin landed a few Sambos and a couple of hard fighting "rat" Yellow Tail Kingfish. There was certainly plenty of fish out there, it was just hard to get past the Sambos. There were also a heap of whales, a couple of which came in close enough to give us some great sites. After having our fill of jigging the rig we then headed off looking for some bottom fish. With a stronger than expected seabreeze it was difficult to get a good drift going. However, Simon skillfully put us onto a big school of pinkys and we were able to catch close to our quota. Honshu also managed a nice Baldchin, while Justin, apart from catching some great pinkys, landed a great Blackarse. Simon picked up a nice solid little Dhuie and I caught a pretty decent sized flathead. All in all, it was a great day. The wind wasn't on its best behaviour, but the fishing was pretty awesome and the company was great. Simon is a great skipper and his new boat is very nice indeed. Simon has most of the pics so he will post them up later. I have posted a pic of Honshu with his Baldie and one of the whales. I have a lot of pics of blue water showing where the whale was, but I won;t post those. All the best, Colin Hay

It was a lot of fun. I had never jigged for sambos before, so ii was a great learning experience watching Simon, Justin and Honshu in action and managing to land a few myself. You should have seen the "bling" on that boat. It was a floating tackle store.

Yes, I bet there was n o shortage of bling! How's your back? Those Sambos can be hard work. What was the biggest landed?

Actually my back and shoulders have come up pretty well

Thu, 2008-10-09 08:30

I warmed up by wrestling the bosses bull terrier for a few weeks. Greatfully the Xzoga rod i Had worked really well considering it was only one the lighter jig rods and it and the reel did all of the hard work.
I think Honshu's Sambo came it about 34 kg.

Simon took a few pics of the rod loaded up. Happily he didn't get a shot of when a big sambo decided to head back to the rig and took a straight route back under the boat. The rod went okay at that stage - but I can't say the same for myself.

The Xzoga rod and the leader performed well. I gave the rod a pretty serious test and it loaded up beautifully and did all they I could have asked of it. Didn't hook onto anything with serious enough teeth to test the leader, but it gave me good confidence knowing it was there.

I always enjoy taking people out and learning from them or getting them onto some new fish. I was actually pretty disappointed for the lads as the really big Sambos that were around a month ago seemed to have dispersed a bit. There was still a few unstoppables but nowhere near as dense as in early Sept.

I thought the bottom fishing gods were frowning at me all afternoon until we hit a big flareup coming back in. A bit of a play with the drift and it was on, with a nice triple hookup for me, col and justin. Honsu would have made it 4 but the nice fishy thought he would decorate his cave with some of Honsu's BLing. He swears he backed the drag off, but I think that was his excuse for getting smoked using a baitcaster in a hot Dhuie and Pinky bite. Learn't a very valuable lesson that I am sure The GUN fisherman hear do, and that is Nail your drift. We caught SFA if we didn't get the drift just right, and it was bloody hard in a 15knot southerly ***ING weatherman W!*nker.(3-5knots my arse)

To be fair to the boat, shoulder on for two hours into a 15knot sea breeze would have loosened the fillings on any trailerboat. Those of you that have fished north of Two Rocks and come in late know what I am talking about. Problem was this red hot bite happened about 23nm north west of the boat ramp. Most unpleasant trip home I think I have ever had. ABout 2 meters between waves and all sharp 1-2m high in the dark = very slow and not nice at all.

Last time we were there we did have a good run in tide which would have congregated the bait a lot more than Wednesday's tide.

Only in 30m out on the bank, but remember we headed to the Biscayne and then went west. I was in deep shit if you are talking about the ride home though and getting back in that late put me in the shit with the missus. That was the distance that the GPS put me as back to the ramp from where we started.
