Suppose it makes sense ..... when all's said & done sharks predate on whales & seals, so the more whales & seals would only mean an increase in what eats them!
just unfortunate that a swimmer,surfer looks a lot like a seal ......
That's all factual GWs follow the whales picking off calves .. Ideally this mitigation should've started in sept .
Apart from human safety concerns .. if this apex predator is allowed to breed for eternity do the math .. GWs 2/3 yrs = up to 15 pups vs Humpbacks 3/4 yrs = 1 calf . Stand to be corrected ..
Just got off the phone to Harry the Humpback whale and he tells me he feels shafted by the greenies and to tell Colin he's doing righty ..
...posted up a link to something Valerie Taylor said...female great whites apparently only give birth to one pup every 2-3 years. It's safe to say that ol' Valerie is definitely on the green side of things these days, but it is also one of nature's laws that the primary control of top end predators is low birth rates.
It should also be noted that most scientific evidence indicates that there are way more humpback whales than white sharks, and these whales spend a considerable portion of their lives in places whites seldom, if ever, go...namely polar and tropical waters. Also, mother humpbacks are fiercely protective of their young...more likely it is the sick/injured whales that are targeted...this benefits not only the predator, but the greater whale population as well.
The power of google has enabled me to ascertain Gws have multiple pups up to 15.. the whales are presumably more numerous at this point in time but I'm thinking in 50-100yrs + time . they are more vulnerable to Gws in temperate waters then for the remainder they are up against the orca .. so far as I understand , it's not uncommon to see Gws teeth rake scars on healthy adults that have thus far been fortunate enough to survive attacks.
It's just a different prospective on possible consequences letting them breed unchecked for eternity .
absolute losers, turned greenies when they realized what the market was for conservation rather then mass killing of sharks, as much credibility as tim flannery!!
...let's look at it in a more simplistic manner...if great white sharks, and other species of sharks, are decimating the humpbacks, why do we still have humpbacks? The sharks and whales have been sharing the oceans since long before us, and then we came along and started knocking whales on the head, so that, combined with your theory that sharks are wiping the whales out, would pretty much mean no more whales.
I think most of us on here who have spent any sort of reasonable time offshore locally over the last ten years or so, would agree that humpback whale numbers are on the rise.
Can anyone tell me when or if, without human interference, one species has forced another into extinction?
Tim Flannery and the Taylor's, amongst others, have more credibility than the combined 'opinion based with some biased 5 min google research' experts shown on this and many other sites.
Non-anthropogenic induced extinction is very rare, a current possible scenario that isn't human caused may be the facial tumors affecting tassie devils, there are also climate change related extinctions that have occurred over the last several hundred years but until only a few hundred years ago science was not very good at recording species so many may have become extinct without human awareness or cause.
