I need a new beach combo!

Just come back from 10 days up at Kalbarri, some good fish caught but what it has addressed is a lack of a longer & heavier casting weight beach stick. I am currently using a Nitro Surf Assassin 12' rod which is a very nice rod but really struggles to cast anything close to 3 ounces. It was also a little short for where we were fishing as the line couldnt clear the breakers. Looking for some suggestions on a rod & reel combo, I have quite a few Nitro rods and really like them, they do the Frankenstien 15' which seems like what im after in terms of quality, length & castability. Reel wise thinking something like the Windcast 5500 or possibly a Jap surf casting reel like the Shimano Aero's or something similar. Any recommendations?

I have been looking at the Abu Veritas Surf, 14 foot 6 inches, 8-15kg line.Looks like a nice rod. Sort of in the same position as you, trying to find a rod to suit that purpose.

If you dont mind using a low mount the posiedon 13ft with the 3 tips will do the job. I have 2 and can easily cast 6ounces plus a mulie with the light tip. Have the emblem pro and a thunnus on mine and both are beautifull reels for casting especially the emblem pro.

Casting

There for casting improvement, I fish with lo mount and hi mount.
The daiwa rods are like tooth picks compared to my Poseidon or Assasin
I use which ever rod suits what I am doing. I prefer high mount for lures and low mount overheads for soaking baits

Ok so deposit is paid on a Saltiga Surf 6000, should be here by the end of the week. Now for the rod............

Looked at some of the Poseidon's today, jesus they look like a pool cue with guides! I like the idea of the multiple tip configurations tho. But they are a beast of a rod that maybe overkill for the 95% of the fish i'd be likely to catch, can you even feel a decent Tailor on the end? I like the Saltiga Ballistic but at 13'3" its only a little longer than my existing 12' stick and due to the really long rear grip (too long for my comfort I think) when its sitting in the rod tube soaking a bait it will probably be shorter that my 12' Surf Assassin, so it wont really be clearing the breakers, there for not really solving one of my existing problems. Longer rod tube maybe....... Any one have this problem with their Daiwa rods?

Mate I have got the Saltiga

Wed, 2011-12-07 11:11

Mate I have got the Saltiga Ballistic 35 and I LOVE IT!  All my fishing is from the beach and it can lob 8 ounces to the horizon with it. By far the best beach rod I have ever owned and I cant recommend them for beach fishing enough.

When I was in the shop looking at them I thought the long but section would be a pain but when using it there is no issue.  I'm 6ft 2 100kg with long arms and it only took a couple of casts to really appreciate the long butt section, it made casting big weights easier for me.

I've had it a couple of months and landed Sharks and Mulloway with it without issues, each time i use it I like it more.

ive got the poseidon 5

Tue, 2011-12-06 21:19

ive got the poseidon 5 piece.......great rod 3 tips s they are really made for overheads ive heard but i use a spinner...........not my preferred rod but it packs small and cast an 8oz a mile and is lite also and i always take this north as a spare

yes you feel bites....dont be fooled by its bulky look, sensitive rods esp with braid.....as a guide if fishing the reefs youll need a min of 14 foot and round the 15 to 25kg rated rod to punch into souwesters

u can bring something liter for calmer days / baitcasting...i have a azegai for that rated 10-15kg, bit softer in the tip and nice for baitcasting to pinks when theyre timid and not taking baits....i genereally have slightly older style thicker blanks as the new thin blanks these days are strong n lite but offset by higher fragility and any small nik in the blank and BANG (read rock fishing)......

want to  get a killer custom.... assassin custom ..........mate had one built round the 500 mark and its a weapon

the ballistics are a nice rod but the high mount setup is friggen crap unless spinning....find yrself an old tiralejo=best of both worlds, i have the 10-20kg blank and its nice but hard to find now as most wont let theirs go

penn talon

Thu, 2011-12-08 09:50

I have just fitted a penn talon to my balistic which is a retro fit movebale reel seat.

This means I can fish it spin, overhead in lo or hi mount.

But i have never been to bothered by the high reel seat for spin reels
