Humminbird 597 or Lowrance HDS5?
Submitted by symetre on Sat, 2011-10-15 19:38
We went looking at sounders for the new Quinny today and have decided to go with a combo unit. Due to some limited dash space we cant fit a separate sounder and chartplotter.
I liked the look of the Humminbird 597cxi HD DI unit, especially the 3D down imaging function and the fact that even with the down imaging you still only need the 1 transducer.
We've also looked at the Lowrance HDS5's but have heard a few reports of them cacking themselves so am starting to sway away from them a bit. Prior to hearing these reports i was pretty impressed with the HDS5 units.
So if anyone has any opinions on either of the above id love to hear it.
Cheers guys.

is a far superior unit to the humminbird i have never seen a hds cack itself so someones telling little stories but you will need 2 trannys for structure scan but it works great

hds for me too
there is no comparison! i went down the same path and im glad i never bought the hummingbird! if you want to get some really good info go to the boat show and talk to the fellas in the simrad and lowrance tent! they will blow your mind with what the hds units can do when set up correctly! i wasnt that wrapped with my unit but i went there friday talked to them changed some settings on my unit and took it out saturday and was amazed at the difference

lowrance v humminbird
lol my hds 5 shat it self several times hence why i got rid of it, you would be going along then ... nothing it just went blank then would take 5 minutes to get it up again, sometimes the picture would just dissapear and randomly come back on again it was just all over the show, in saying that there were some positives to the unit which were it read really well at high speeds and when the screen wasnt cutting out/ turning off the picture was sensational, now im not going to bag the unit out as some of my mates have had a good run with them but then some of my other mates have had the same luck as me.... i now use humminbird and am very happy although id doesnt seem to read very well at over 30 knots but up to 30 it is a crisp picture....

Um afraid not, humminbird are far better units
Lowrance 480x 480 pixels Humminbird 640 x 640 so better screen displays
Lowrance frequency 50-200 / 83-200 kHz Humminbird 200-800kHz
Humminbird target separation 2.5' can't find such information for Lowrance
I've got the 798 SI/DI so save your $$ and get the 798.
Lowrance now have software updates on the net whoopy do....... Humminbird have for 5 years
Lowrance just optioned side/down imaging at an extra cost oh my.......... Humminbird have for years at no extra cost even with software free updates
Lowrance BS
Humminbird intergate units also.
I think you just learned one valuable lesson RE above posts...it's the operator who doesn't know what he's doing!
