How can I find a bloody Sambo?

 Hello all

Its my first year fishing Perth- I have a 5.75m Cruise Craft with a 150hp 4 stroke Yamaha and have fished from Cockburn to Mindarie and have been lucky in landing a couple of Dhufish and other table fish. But I can't find Sambos! I have read countless posts where people complain about plagues of these fish destroying their day and would be greatful if someone could offer some advise as I would be happy to be stretched - getting a bit sick of heading off over the horizon 20-30km whenever weather permits for very little action- can you find good numbers near by? Are there areas that I should focus?  Have read everything I could find on the net and prefer to fish Ocean Reef or Mindarie, have tried baits, jigs ect Any help would be great thanks

Keep trying mate, look for good arches over prominent peaks, but unfortunately we get ours on pretty non descript bottom, and they are always in the same place, despite lack of structure.

It took me two years of building up a "database" of fishing locations, tide, time of year etc before we started catching fish regularly. This is part of the fun.......Don't try and shortcut the fun bit!

gemini wreck

Fri, 2012-08-24 08:23

the gemini wreck off ocean reef holds some absolute monsters , but they can be finicky bastards so its well worth while spending an hour inshore to get a few live whiting/herring./skippy /or wrasse before heading there, they can also be difficult to stop there as even on heavy gear (80lb braid and heavy drag) they often cut you off on the wreck, other than that we have had great success at this time of year anchoring on the large marked contours (oval or circular spot elevations) marked on your gps chart in 30-40m out of two rocks then berleying with cubed mulies and chook pellets and floating down mulies with a small ball sinker.   good luck

Even simpler get a wrass or

Even simpler get a wrass or similair on your line and play with it for a while whitout geting it out of the water and not that far off the bottom.

Due to the signals this hooked fish sends out the Sambo's and the like will come and investigate!

Then quickly hook the livey to a decent sambo live rig and you are having a fight.

They were bloody every where

Fri, 2012-08-24 12:11

They were bloody every where last Sunday. Got absolutely smoked a couple of times and I was only in 40 metres about 16 kms out from Woodies but I launch from Point Perron. I came in to 20 metres near the five fathom bank to get away from them and they were there too. Good fun but was looking for more than one Dhu for the day.
