Hi Wallygong. The frequency

Hi Wallygong.
The frequency of your transducer is all important in the first instance.
If it's 200 you may be at it's limit at 300m
If it's 50 you shouldn't have a problem. I haven't used the Furuno 588 and therefore not familiar with its specific settings.
Have you got John Adams book on sounders. Really worth the money.
Cheers

The vertical lines might  suggest electrical interference. Hard to say without a screenshot.

As far as adjusting the range you can find the range adjustment settings under the system -> range menu.

Thanks for the feedback gents am definately on low frequency and adjusting the range between 5 and 300 however doesn't seem Togo deeper? Also sounder turned itself off a couple times when I was starting or killing the engine? And ideas? Cheers

As I mentioned above, the range settings can be altered in the system menu. The default max range (range 8) is 300m. You can find this on page 26 of the manual.

 If your sounder is turning

If your sounder is turning off with engine start I'd check the health of your battery.

Seen this happen on two different boats now.

In each case the battery was nearing the end of its life.

Of course the other possibility is a faulty or loose connection somewhere giving the same result.

I found loose connection on a new boat in the cabin where all the fuses are.

If you haven't already done so this is worth checking.

 Check the cranking amps on

Thu, 2017-03-02 16:52

Check the cranking amps on your battery then check what yr motor requires the battery may be undergunned. My furuno turns off when the volts drop to 9 or so. I bought a new battery with amps to spare been great since. As said above yr battery may be on the way out depends how long it sat in the new boat before you  bought it. Hope this helps.

question

Why would you want 300m of range on an 8 inch screen, i may be thinking wrong so please correct me if i am but if you ware searching for bottom in 300m of water wouldnt you pick the range at say 80 or 40m and shift down to 280m until the bottom shows up ?

Thats what i to as the shift function goes to 800m
