What area do you live in davey

If you are south of river you should pop into Oceanside tackle they will point you in the right direction for a rod and reel. If north of the river, the guys at the Tackle Shack will look after you.

If you don;t live near those shops, try for a 400 size penn reel and a 10 or 12 foot penn surf rod, or a similar sized silstar rod.

If you are chasing tailor, the most reliable method is to use a beach paternoster rig and mulies for bait.

Basically a beach paternsoter rig consists of a length of leader line, say a metre, attached to a three way swivel. On te bottom of that line to can tie a loop knott, which you can then use to attach your sinker. Another, shorter length of leader line is tied to another of the three-way swivel connections. On this line you attach a ganged set of 3/0, 4/0 or 5/0 hooks. Mustad brand are good for this and relatively cheap. You can buy the gangs already made up.

Your main line is attached to the remaining connection of the 3 way swivel.
You then thread a mulie onto the gangs, measuring so that the hook closest to the rod tip will be placed through, or as near as, the eye of the fish.
Casct your bait out into a gutter at the beach and wait for some bites. You will now when a tailor hits as it is normally a smash, smash, smash bite and then the fish is off.

If you are in the area, try Floreat drain in the evening as there are some good tailor there at the moment.

If you need any more info, don't hesitate to ask.

Not sure how many gutters you will find up that way

But slow retreive is definately the go.
You should try the jetty that is furthest north at Cervantes. Go the north west corner in the morning or the evening. When I have been there the tailor have always been going off at that place.

But I love tailor myself.
Go to this link and you will find all sorts of info on sizes and bag limits.

There is a spot between Cervanties and Jurian called hill river.  You will get your bag limit of 8 easily on a good night.  Really nice gutter runs through there.
