beach combo
G'day mate,
I've said this many times and i'll say it again - in my opinon the Penn Spinfisher 850ssm is the best beach reel you can get. Holds heaps of line, especially if your running braid. If you fill it up with 30-40lb braid you'll fit 600-700m depeding on what brand. One of the toughest reels on the market, and you can get one for about 100-150 bucks if you look around. The only downside to the reel is that it's quite heavy (which i dont mind) but you'll need to match it correctly with a good rod.
Shimano have some decent beach rods like the Aero Wave Graphite and the Beastmaster.
Some good Penn beach rods are the Torque Surf, the PowerStick Surf and the Spinfisher surf.
Just make sure your rod you choose is at last 12ft for surf fishing.
Good luck mate!
Cheers

Behind the times?? Just like you and me Huh?? LOL
The Penn Spinfishers are great reels at the price and designed for rough-nuts like us on the beach. At the price they are throw away items. For a decent surf rig I wouldn't need to spend more than $400 for the lot (excluding braid). IMO keep it simple and catch/lose a few and then justify to yourself why you should spend so much on boutique gear.
