Gopro experts? The latest units?

Hey guys,  After watching Walkdady's videos I have decided to break into the 21st century and buy a gopro.

This appears to be the latest, greatest I could find on ebay

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/GoPro-HERO3-Black-Edition-Plus-Adventure-from-Melbourne-based-Retail-Store-/331204141237?pt=AU_Video_Cameras&hash=item4d1d4e20b5

Does anyone know if I can get a better price in Perth?  I am in Karratha.

Also, what else will I need?  High speed SD card?  Which is best and what GByte.

Is there likely to be a new model gopro coming out in the near future, I can wait if there will be a better version soon.

thanks for any info

To be honest the next most important thing you'll need other than the gopro itself is a computer/laptop that can handle the footage you've filmed to process and edit.

Have been using GoPros for a while making snowboarding edits. Computer and storage play a big part. I usually have around 100gb after a few weeks filming here and there.

As long as it's a 'Black' then you're right, 1080P at 60FPS looks amazing. You can get away with a 32gb card but 64 is better, needs to be class 10.

Price seems decent, don't forget to factor in card and mounts.

They're probably due to bring out a new model by the end of the year (possibly announced November) which will be TWICE as good.....

But no, you will probably not notice he difference ;)

Thanks sulo, that is a bit cheaper than ebay.... but appears to only be the camera and waterproof case.

How long does a battery last for if you have it on standby (eg trolling and only start recording when you get a hookup) compared to recording constantly.

Does anyone recommend buying a second battery... and can they be charged in  a car 12 volt?

Wed, 2014-08-13 18:37

At 1080p30 the Hero3+ Black Edition is meant to be able to film 2 hours continuously, and the Hero3+ Silver Edition films for 3 hours continuously

Buying a second battery is a good idea, you might not always need it but you will be happy that you got it when you do :p

I would definitely invest in a second battery! Just makes life so much easier using it, you dont have to always worry about running out of battery life!

i would get rid of the go pro battery had noting but let downs with it. i would look on ebay for a wassabi battery you get two batteries and a 240v wall charger, they last longer and hold there charge better. i use them first then my go pro batt last oif needed. Hope this helps.

Recommend looking at trackAxPC or Pinnacle Studios for easy to use editing of your go pro stuff. I had a hard time with the Gopro Studio program...

GoPro Hero 3 White

Wed, 2014-08-13 20:47

Use the basic GoPro Hero 3 White for all my footage. Carry an extra battery on board and also set the camera to automatically switch off when on pause. Furthermore a USB charger that plugs into the cigarette lighter on the boat serves as a back-up should the second battery go flat.

Also use the basic software - Windows Movie Maker, downloadable for free. Looking forward to your footage on YouTube.

Hi Fisheagle, thanks for your input.

I have noticed a lot of videos where the horizon is curved.  Is this avoidable?  Is it just from older Gopros.

It does look a bit unusual.

Anyone know if this can be eradicated

Thats because the gopro lens is fisheye, only way to avoid is if you shoot level with the horizon, the horizon in dead centre of the lens

curves, so dont mind the fisheye look. It sort of says GoPro to me. If I am not going to get the unit wet I also have a double battery pack which increase the footage time. The single battery IMO doesnt last near 2-3hrs. I have the large battery and 2 smaller ones to change if its flat, or have to use the underwater waterprrof case.

Hey mate, in terms of a new model coming out - the GoPro 4 should be out in the next couple of months.  Nothing official from GoPro yet, but it's widely reported that it will be released in October 2014.  The Hero 4 sounds pretty impressive compared to the 3+, but it depends on whether you want to take the chance waiting for it.  You can't really go too wrong with the 3+ anyway.

Cheers

Thu, 2014-08-14 10:04

You can change the fisheye look. But you lose the wide angle missing some of the action and it will shake more. Few extra battery's would be ideal. Having a pole to chuck underwater can get some awesome footage aswell.

new one out soon with a remote veiw finder

GoPro Hero 4 specs and release date are disclosed

GoPro has become a phenomenon in the world of extreme sports and leisure. You can see it in the most unexpected places. These cameras without fear invades into the world of air, water, earth to reverse the commonness. That is why the new model HERO 4 will force the heart beats still often.

new 4k Action Camera gopro hero 4 2014

First of all GoPro Hero is a compact, rugged, lightweight (less than 100 grams) action camera with a special attachment for anything (boards, kiteboarding, surfing, windsurfing, helmets, ski poles, cars, bikes, BMXs and other that can be in motion). Everyone will be able to enjoy hours of video about your achievements and exciting emotions in 4K quality.

GoPro Hero 4 is really capable of recording video in 4K resolution at a speed of 30 frames per second, 1080p at 120fps and 720p at 240fps, which became possible with the advent of the new SoC Ambarella A9 chip (dual A9 ARM Core ® CortexTM-A9 processor 1GHz with FPU accelerator) for advanced applications, wireless connection and streaming video in social media.

GoPro Hero 4 will also come with a 13-megapixel photosensor and a completely new lens for shooting in dark. Multi-Exposure and HDR WDR tone mapping, electronic image stabilization, also improved MCTF. Dual sensor interfaces 12-lane SLVDS/HiSPiTM/subLVDS, 4-lane, remote viewfinder playback which is extremely easy to use. You shouldn’t to have special technical knowledge or skills to do it. GoPro Hero cameras are amazing because they have a waterproof housing with a flat lens for shooting under water (up to 60m). Built-in Wi-Fi module, USB & HDMI - the only thing that brings it closer to homeliness. The camera has the ability to capture still images during video recording and perform encoding H.264/ BP / MP / HP Level 5.1 and MJPEG.

GoPro Hero 4 will hit on shelves in October 2014. Action Cameras of GoPro have become extremely popular as an excellent way to capture high-quality video at high speeds relative to the price that usually is $340.

Should be $500 australian if previous models are anything to go by, it's the same jump in technology the 2 was to the 3. Early models will no doubt have firmware issues. Looks mint though, will be getting one as soon as I can.

You should get the best quality card you can afford. As others have said, the GoPro can be set at very high resolution and the better cards help with data transfer and recording.

I started with a low class card and quickly realized i should have just got the best one available.

One word...

FAKES

Beware. Suck it up and just get them from Harvey Norman or such. No use having a nice new Go pro, that then stuffs up because of a crap card. I only use sandisk extreme 32BG CL10's. There have been problems with the 64's. Just google it. Your battery will run out before the 32's fill.

Cheers Pete
