Furuno 295 with Airmar TM265LH

Airmar info says that you can use the TM265LH chirp transducer with the Furuno 295. Haven't been able to find any info by anyone who has actually done it. I know its a long shot but has anyone on the forum heard of this combo. The reason that I'm interested is because with my Boston Whaler I need to go with a transum mounted transducer and I want a 295.....not very impressed with what I have read about chirp so far....

Why would you use a chirp

Why would you use a chirp transducer with a non-chirp sounder?

There are other options than TM for BW, just they're more work to install.

why

Airmar says that it is an excellent combination and later when the Furuno chirp unit is available I will already have a chirp transducer. Have you actually had experience with modifying a BW? Not to keen on cutting holes.....

Just seems like a lot of beatup to put that transducer onto a $$$ head unit like the 295.

If its short-term, just save the $$$ and get a 585 and m260.

There is supposed to be an in-hull transducer mounting point on the Conquests, did you check that out?

 I'm running a transom

Sat, 2013-01-12 09:38

I'm running a transom mounted  2kw 38 hz. An 1kw 200hz. You can get plastic moulds made to house the trany and a Ali or staino bracket to mount it. If your only going 1kw why not just run a 585.

Every one I know with chirp isn't happy with it!

I didn't know that you could get a 2kw TM, I would be very interested in seeing what you have done. I like the 295 because it seems like a heavey duty semi commercial unit and everyone who has one appears to be very happy with it. Looking to buy something that will last for a long time and not get caught up in gimmicks, I was thinking that Chirp was the go until I started reading about the problems that some users are having with it....

You can get a 5kW transducer

Sat, 2013-01-12 10:00

You can get a 5kW transducer if you really want, could knock a few knots off the top speed though!

Any of the tank mount ones can be me made into a transom mount with a simple bracket, Southcity104 did that on his previous boat.

^^ look in the equipment list, to get the best of that unit, you're buying separate 28/38/50/200kHz units with 1/2/3/5kW output, although some are software tuneable between a range of frequencies.

My mate with a Boston whaler

Sat, 2013-01-12 10:28

My mate with a Boston whaler Conquest 285 has a shoot thru m260 in his and Barons old man has a shoot thru m260 in his 235 conquest, so it can be done, but a bit of mucking about.

My 235 has a specific putty box for thru hull (hole saw jobbie) which I am leaning toward, but go see Reece, he is the expert on Furuno.

Agree, CHIRP is not developed enough yet.

you cant get a 2kw tm. you

Sat, 2013-01-12 11:48

you cant get a 2kw tm. you get a plastic mould made that a in hull trany (rubber coated) sits in (wet face)  then a L shape bracket made that bolts to the top of the plastic mould an to the back of your boat. we have done this in 4 boats an works well! you can do the same with a 1 or 2kw 200hz for your shallower stuff. you cant run a tm 260 and a big trany on the 295 as you can only tune 2 tap settings but you can get a tm 1kw single 200hz. we have it on 3 fcv 295s an one 585 with a power box to run the 2kw 50hz an wer sounding fish in 450m! you can fit a ca50bl-12hr or a ca38-9hr in the same mould. the 38 is about 10mm taller,

Still a transom mount with all the associated issues though. How do you stop turbulence?

Sat, 2013-01-12 14:52

Iv got a bracket similar to that now an get turbulence unless doing 5+ knts to keep the ass down. You can use a similar bracket then have your mold below it! If your worried about loosing speed you mount it on a drop down pole. So when it's up you can still sound at speed then when you slow Dow an start sounding for fish you can drop it an extra 100/200mm to compleat key avoid turbulence. If I had a glass boat I'd be going southcitys way

FCV295

Is a 3 kw sounder. If your not going to use that power why bother.  Thats why I got the R299 trani which is a broadband transducer and gives a brilliant return on the 295

Comes back to the issue of mounting in a Ali boat for me! And that 2 kw in 50 or 38hz is more than enough to shoot 500m with perfect detail.

FCV 295 and the CHIRP units

Thu, 2013-02-14 12:54

Also...I have used both the FCV295 and the FCV1150 with several CHIRP transdcuers...the R111C-LH and the CM599CLM with superb results over the standard tone pulse transdcuers.

Natuarly it is a non CHIRP mode but the higher qualtiy CHRIP transdcuers used with a selectable freq soanr was most postive.

We did this as a test prior to adding a full CHIRP system.
