Flying foam moorings

 Hi All,

Chasing info from any old school ktowners on rough locations (or exact would be even better, lol) of the old moorings that were pulled out of the foam.  Really want to tick that one off the bucket list, but don't want to spend hours zigzagging trying to find them. Have some rough ideas on where I think they were, but any help be good.

Cheers

Like to catch a solid ocean jew, not just a creek one.  Really enjoy exploring round the foam, had a ripper jack session in Searipple on the weekend.

but without any certainty I seem to recall there being cyclone moorings located at the southern end of Flying Foam Passage.  Perhaps 0.5 - 1nm in?

Never tried flying foam for a jew, my fav spots were Dampier Wharf, East intercourse, Dampier Salt wharf, entrance to DS inlet pumps (pond zero), Cape Lambert service wharf (15yrs ago), Northern side of Depuch at the wreck and the rock wall at Balla Balla and all at night - good luck getting anywhere near a wharf these days though lol.
My fav was the wreck at Depuch, pretty consistent black jew on spring tides and gee they pull like a freight train - would always travel from Cossack as Balla Balla was a freakn nightmare at night on spring tides.
I think Flying Foam would certainly hold jewie's on the right tides and moon phases and wish I had some co ords for you Adam as its a fishy area.

I just had a chat to my dad

Thu, 2023-03-09 15:14

I just had a chat to my dad - been in KTA since 94, dived and fished a lot of it and worked at the Port Authority for a while
he is keen to know as well! - said he was not aware of any moorings in the passage, the strong tidal movement through FFP would seem an odd place to put them.
He did mention the old pearlers settlement in Blackhawk bay near the northern end on the western side, i have been there a few times with him, lots of lengths of (very) rusted large chain on the mud/sand from a long time ago - some cool rock art there too if you venture up away from the beach
not sure if that helps
cheers

Maps

Been trying to find some old maps without having to pay the $50 online fee, but come up short. Do have some rough ideas to refine the sounding area down.

Found a vid of Webby and Pilbarabrad catching a couple up there.

Yeh bit scared of trying the jetties these days given CCTV camera quality, although would be trying at night.

Do you have side scan? Its very good at picking up that type of structure in shallow depths. I used to get in tight to the cliffs on the west side of Dolphin island to overnight, mainly to be safe from the prawn trawlers. I would anchor as close the the cliff as I safely could. The mulloway used to come through there during the evening at times had schools of them under the boat.

Moorings

Thu, 2023-03-16 15:58

Stretching memory bank, but many many moons ago there was moorings at north end of flying foam, think they were scattered round a bit, used to see work boats / trawlers moored on them, some in middle of passage and some on north east side

sorting out shed at moment but I think somewhere (?) ther may be some old charts of area if so I'll see if any moorings are listed

He was a ship loader operator for HI until he retired a few years ago. Unfortunately he is in S A presently and won't be back to the Cat until just before Easter .....he will then be sailing to the Mounties and Dampier and he has promised to search them out the moment he gets back to the boat and will let me know the co-ords
