Floater and what do we do
Submitted by crasny1 on Fri, 2009-05-15 19:24
I have just raised something in Simos regarding the beautiful cod.
I hate killing fish and just wonder if there is or might be a solution to the floaters we are and have been by regulation forced to leave behind (as usual probably for the "Tax Man"). See the link

sounds funny
other than doing wat simo said and adding sinkers to my release weight i did try something at the monte bellos that may sounds funny and i know some people wont believe me but it worked and i was proud the cod lived on due to our efforts.. in our case which again was a super sized cod and over 50kg i tried everything but it just wouldnt budge.. ended up getting some 20lb nylon a 5/0 gammy octopus hook squashing the barb and tieing it to the bend in the hook... then tied the nylon to the anchor and put the hook thru the skin in the side of cods mouth... set up exactly the same as release weight... woola off she went and the cod broke the nylon once back down from whence it came... happy days and ive got video to prove it

Wrong
The pro's have to put undersize fish back regardless of it being alive or dead and their penalty for undersized fish is double what the amateur one is so it would be a very expensive fish if brought in and found by an inspector

I use have a 2x6lb dive
I use have a 2x6lb dive weight release weight that will bring anything back down. It's jus ta real pain to get back up!!! I kid you not, seriously thinking of a deck winch for it.

Anyone who has floaters has
Anyone who has floaters has to look deeper into fish care and handling.
There is a plethora of information on this on the internet in prevention.
What does float ends up as food back into the biomass.
The rest is arrogance for the well being of the fish. Anyone not willing to heed the practiceis facing their opportunity to be ceased to continue which unfortunately is inevitable over the next 5 years.

You use a nut and bolt to
You use a nut and bolt to join the two weights and a bent stainless steel rod as the hook, between them. The best and cheapest source for this is in Northbridge, the Asian provision shops. They use a stainless steel rod to skewer roast pork - $2.50.
The dive weights cost an arm and a leg though, but it does not roll around on deck.

some may not be keen
Some of you may not be keen to do this and might not carry mask and snorkel on board, but if you jump in and swim them down the first couple of meters then they go back without too many dramas. (most times) Other option is to hook the reef anchor in the side of the mouth and drop it 10m or so as the chain is heavy enough to get it down.

Good one Adam, never thought of that, it is terrible though
when they don't go back (dhuie) if we catch one each most of the time they go back, but you do it the odd one that doesn't, we move a long way away, just in case we have hit on a nursery. don't know if the young onces do stay in a nursery but we move just in case.
