Flares

Perhaps you guys could clear something up for me.
When I did my RST the fella said the dates on the flares were for professionals. ie. you cannot get into strife for out of date flares on a recreational vessel.
Is this true?
Thanks.

As I understand
As I understand it.....
Vessels requiring surveys (charter boats/commercial fishers/shipping/military/etc) need to have their flares "in date"...the moment they expire, get new ones. For private boats, the rules are more relaxed. As long as the flares are in good condition (like new) the use-by dates aren't as critical in the eyes of a DPI/fisheries inspector.
I do think that it has to be kept within reason, however. I think you're asking for trouble (both with the law and in the case of an emergency) if your flares are really old. Trouble is, what is everybody's definition of "old"?

I usually keep my flares for 2-3 years after the used by date and keep them in good condition in a flare box, I pull them out every 2-3 months and check them over for any water or external damage. Does anyone here know where to get rid of them,I've got 2 old sets in my shed.

I worked at Dinghy World in Como for a short while. They'll take your old flares off ya & dispose of them.
