DoF Log Books - Suggestion Adam
Submitted by Dreamweaver on Mon, 2008-06-16 17:10
Adam, again, thanks for sending me the DoF Log Book and other literature.
Having (finally) had the chance to use it, I attempted to complete my log sheet (you may recall I have the 'Ocen Edition') and, even with a slight chop, it was nie on impossible to write legibly.
Would the DoF be interested in producing a 'Field Sheet' that could be used for field scratch notes? Of course, I could quickly knock one up using MS Word, but thought I'd post the suggestion.

Hi Colin
We do have 'catch cards' which are waterproof and easily written on which can be transcribed later, we have used them for competitions recently but I am unaware if they are generally available. If you would like me to follow up on some for you that would be no problem, just let me know.
If anyone else is interested in a fisheries research log book please contact me. They are an awesome fishing diary and useful fisheries research tool.
On this day last year according to my logbook:
I was nightfishing in Exmouth marina, (location undisclosed) 3m of water between 8pm and 11pm and caught 2 spangled emperor, one at 25cm and one 29cm and 3 yellowfin bream with all fish being released. Notes for the day say: fished with Gribbo and Bel, late spring tide at 12.30am, lots of bites began hour before high, but to late to continue. Then on the 18th I was fishing for bonefish at Pilgramunna.
Cheers,
Adam

Thanks Adam...thought
Yes, that would be great thanks Adam, as I said, I could easily knock them up and could have just sent you a PM, but thought the broader (re)awareness as to the importance of Log Books was worth a public post.
Besides, I suspect anyone else using (or about to use) the Log Sheets on a boat in the ocean would face the same problem and not everyone would feel comfortable knocking one up on their computer. So general avialbility as an adjunct to the log sheets would both solve this problem and help ensure the log sheets were legible. Which, of course is both important and makes it easier for DoF staff.

Hi Russ
Much easier than that, all I need is your postal details and I can order one to be sent off, they are stored with the research department down in Perth.
Colin, I will submit that as a suggestion to the person in charge of log books, its a good idea. I don't know if they'll agree with me calling it the 'Molloy Protocol' though. :)
If anyone has a picture of themself or a family member with a strange and unusual fish that they need identified or have identified, we would like to use that photo to educate others in the RAP (research angler program) newsletter. It would be much appreciated, please PM me for my work email address if you can help out.
Cheers,
Adam

Great record and pupose
I really think everyone should have these, besides providing essential information to DoF, they are an excellent cat record and log book and take no time at all to complete!
Far better than 'sample kreel surveys'

matt and russ
Matt and Russ your log books will be on the way soon. Colin, I enquired about the waterproof catch cards, they do have them and will look at putting them in the packs in future. If you contact the research dept in Hillaries they should be able to send some out, I'm not sure of a direct contact unfortunately as I can't get on the intranet at the moment.
Cheers,
Adam

OK Adam, thanks for that, will do!
Great that they adopted the suggestion - do I get a dividend from the 'think tank slush fund'?
