Fitzroy Barra Tagging

Hi Guys,

Does anyone know of any barra tagging and research programs for the Fitzroy river ?

I release all the barra i catch and wouldnt mind getting involved in tagging some fish and doing my bit for the future of the fishery.

Thanks

Not too sure Drbroome. Head down to the fishing club and see Rob or Jeff. They would be the guys to see about it. Off the top of my head I dont think there is but you never know.

Depending how keen you are you could always join the Nickol Bay Sports Fishing Club in Dampier. They do ANSA tagging on a huge variety of sportsfish and Barra are one of them. There are always heaps of recaptures each year so it can be pretty exciting for the taggers.

Ther were a few guys up here a few years ago tagging Fitzroy barra but nothing has been done since. Come up the club and I will give you the details of who was involved in it and what they did.One of the guys worked up here for fisheries and has a lot of info.

I would advise against the fisheries run tagging program. It may have changed but I know a few years ago they were requesting frames from recaptured barra with the fisheries tag (red tag) which isn't in the best interest of most anglers who wish to release them. I would stick with ANSA (yellow tag) tagging programs if possible.

The guys up here that did it were purely catch and release with only measurements and weight taken. I beleive they struggled to get any support from fisheries.
