Fishing times/Tides

Mike the Mad Russian has taught me fishing for the last couple of years - when we can get to the shoreline that is.

He has been fishing most of his life but I feel he is somewhat blinkered in his approach.

A good example is his idea of fishing for mulloway.

ONLY on the high tide with a full moon.

Of course, that is usually at midnight, once a month and my work commitmentns don't allow it. Even if it did I'm not wrapped in the idea of going to the places he wants to go, such as Pipidinny and north of Two rocks at that time. Not enough experience in 4WDing, trying to get on a beach at midnight.

My question is

Although there are obviously peak times to fish certain species do you believe trhat other times they are not available? Surely Mulloway don't eat once per month!!!

Added to this is that I sometimes have an hour or two in the afternoon and am working close to the beach, If I kept a rod and some HB/SP's in my 4WD, is there any value in trying to fish the beaches?

Thanks for your comments

Certainly there are better times for catching certain fish. But I have certainly caught mulloway at times which would not be considered ideal. As you say, they can't eat just once a month.

For those fishing in the Swan river, how do you estimate the tide time since the only one shown on the Bureau of Meteorology site is up to Freo only? I'd like to know how to calculate the time that high tide will reach the certain part of the river where I'm fishing.

Tides for Mulloway.

The general belief is that you want to be two hours on either side of the high tide, at least when beach fishing for them. The theory is that this maximises the amount of water in the gutters where the fish like to "patrol" for a feed. Like tailor there is also a feeling that lower light conditions are better, early mornings or late afternoons/evenings on into night, but I reckon if the tide's right the mulla can be there any time of day or night.

It is possible to catch mulloway on lures...got an 8 kilo one last year at Singleton Beach using a 55 gram metal slice, but that was one fish over what has probably been a thousand casts since, so don't tell the missus to warm up the frying pan on your way out the door to attempt this sort of thing! If you're like me and the beach is handy for you, and you're not particularly upset about not catching a fish time and time again, then GO FOR IT because maybe one day BANG and you've got a memory for a lifetime!

Regarding fishing times One Eyed Phil, sure there are certain conditions that produce better than others but sometimes its just having the line in the water (fish dont always follow the rules).

Thanks for the comments guys

Now if I can only convince my wife we can live off fish and the three wardrobes of clothes are enough for her, I can stop work from interfering with my fishingSmile

Up at four to go to work doesn't seem right. Up at four to go fishing  - that I can handle

Work - the curse of the fishing class!
